True education is all encompassing in its scope and its impact stretches from the cradle to the grave. Unfortunately, the present day education, which narrows down the individual’s outlook to a specific and materialistic goal is found wanting in this respect. This has created a void, which poses a major obstruction in the moulding of an individual, which in turn has a devastating effect on the world at large. The rich cultural heritage of India has always blessed us with great souls, who have taken upon themselves the task of emancipating mankind from the shackles of ignorance. And so, Satguru Mata Amritanandamayi Devi, spiritual Master and Divine Mother to millions of Her children across the globe has dedicated her life for bringing in such a transformation thereby moulding a new generation, one characterized by a synthesis of knowledge, humanistic values and tradition.

In order to disseminate the message of spirituality, universal love and selfless service to humanity, which shine through the life and teachings of Amma, Mata Amritanandamayi Math was founded with the headquarters at Amritapuri, Kollam. It organises activities in spiritual, social, cultural health and educational sectors across the country. The educational activity commenced with the establishment of an Industrial Training Centre and a few Amrita Vidyalayams (primary and secondary schools). It gained momentum with the addition of an engineering college (Amrita Institute of Technology & Science) at Ettimadai, Coimbatore. Amrita Institute of Computer Technology, specialised in advanced computer education added variety to the educational programmes offered by Amrita Institutions. It has many centres across the country.

Amrita Institute of Management (AIM), was established in 1996, at Coimbatore breaking a new path in the direction of quality management education. With its nationally accredited Management Programmes, AIM has matured to be placed among the top-ranking Business Schools in India. The Management School is run by eminent faculty from leading American Universities, Indian Institute of Management and premier industries in India and abroad. AIM also has a highly successful Industrial Liaison Programme.

Next in line to follow was Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences & Research Centre(AIMS) Kochi in 1998, a Super-Speciality Hospital with state-of-the-art medical amenities on par with the leading medical centers around the world. The College of Medicine was inaugurated in 2002 at Kochi, followed by the College of Nursing, College of Pharmacy and College of Dentistry in 2003. AIMS offers higher learning in all areas of medicine like Cardiology, Neurology, Nephrology, General Surgery etc.

Within a decade, Amrita Institutions has made rapid strides and has evolved into a Deemed University. An International Advisory Board, a Board of Management & an Academic Council comprising eminent academicians and experts in different fields provide necessary guidance and leadership to Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham.
