Close on the heels of the historic Indo-US agreement in Higher Education and Research spearheaded by Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham Deemed University, the thirteenth International Conference on Advanced Computing and Communications “ADCOM 2005” was inaugurated on 15 December, 2005 at the Amrita University campus in Coimbatore. ADCOM, one of the premier international IT conferences in India was last held in Coimbatore 2 years back in 2003 at PSG College of Technology. ADCOM is one of the most popular forums for IT researchers and practitioners to present original work in a number of cutting-edge areas of computing and communications. The conference is co-organized by the Coimbatore center of Computer Society of India (CSI) and Advanced Computing and Communications Society (ACS), two of the premier international professional associations in India. Hewlett Packard India and Tata Consultancy Services are the corporate sponsors. The ADCOM conference series is an annual event of the Advanced Computing and Communications Society (ACS). More than 150 participants attended the conference, which included delegates from Japan, Australia, Turkey, Singapore, Canada and the USA.
On 15 December, 2005, Dr. Anirban Basu, President of ACS inaugurated the conference and Dr. David Kahaner, Asian Technology Information Program, delivered the CDAC-ACS Foundation Lecture. Two more invited talks and four tutorials were presented at the conference. The invited talks were given by Dr. Venu Govindaraju, University at Buffalo, USA; on “Passwords on Fingertips: Challenges and Solutions”, and the second by Dr. Ajay Gupta, Hewlett-Packard Laboratories on “HP Labs: Innovating for the Unique Needs of India”. The four pre-conference advanced tutorials on 14 December were held in the areas of Voice over IP by Dr. Ravi Mittal, Flextronics Software Systems, Bangalore; Grid Computing by Dr. Raj Buyya, University of Melbourne; Aspect Oriented Programming by Dr. Venkatesh Choppella. Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management-Kerala, Trivandrum and Anurag Mendhekar, Blue Vector Systems; and Document Image Analysis by Dr. Umapada Pal of Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata. Dr. Venkat Rangan, Vice Chancellor, Amrita University presided over the inaugural function. The conference was also telecast to the Amrita campuses at Bangalore and Amritapuri (Kollam, Kerala).
Dr. Bharat Jayaraman, Programme Chair of the conference and Director – Engineering of Amrita University said that, “ADCOM 2005 received a record total of 370 papers of which the technical program committee selected 100 full papers based upon two to four written reviews for each paper by the program committee members and additional referees. The program committee had members from countries such as U.S., Canada, Germany, France, Australia, Singapore, Japan, and India. Selection was based upon quality, originality, and relevance of the submission to the scope of the conference.
Dr. Bharat Jayaraman, added that, “The conference theme this year is ‘pervasive computing’. Advances in wireless and mobile computing, communications and networking, embedded computing devices, and smart sensors are ushering in a radically new paradigm of computing. Computers are already embedded into everyday objects and pervade our environment as they break away from the cliché of the keyboard-and-monitor boxes. Ubiquitous and secure, the environment, rather than a specific computer box, has become invisibly saturated with computers and information. This paradigm of pervasive computing has far-reaching consequences in all areas of society, including medicine, engineering, business, etc. Computing has the potential to become as accessible as a power outlet, blending seamlessly into our environment, simplifying rather than complicating it”.
Dr. Bharat is also the Chairman of Computer Science department at the State University of New York, Buffalo, having been on a sabbatical from Buffalo for a year to serve Amrita University as Director-Engineering. Dr. P. Nagabhushan, Programme Committee co-chair and Chair of Computer Science at University of Mysore proposed the vote of thanks for the inaugural session.
