ABOUT AMRITA VISHWA VIDYAPEETHAM

One of the youngest universities in India, Amrita has, since 1994, evolved into a dynamic inter-disciplinary research university, spread across four campuses in South India. The constituent colleges include schools in Applied Arts & Sciences, Biotech, Engineering & Technology, Journalism, Medicinal & Health Sciences, and Management. The campuses are connected through a dedicated satellite network from Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). The network has transformed Amrita University into a fully interactive, interdisciplinary, multi-media, virtual campus sans geographic boundaries and limitations, the first of its kind in India.

Driven by a firm commitment to excellence, Amrita University is fast emerging as a pioneering research university educating a new generation of scientists, engineers, managers, doctors, media professionals and leaders of caliber and depth of character. Amrita University is, for instance, the lead Indian academic institution in the path breaking Indo–US Inter-University Collaborative Initiative in Higher Education and Research. This agreement was inked during the historic visit of Indian Prime Minister to Washington DC, USA on 20 July 2005. Five leading US Universities including the University of California campuses at Berkeley and San Diego, Carnegie Mellon University at Pittsburgh, Cornell University at Ithaca – New York and State University of New York at Buffalo, will join hands with Indian institutions led by Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, ISRO and Government of India’s Department of Science and Technology (DST) to enhance higher education in India through the satellite EDUSAT. The initiative is funded by three of the leading technology companies Microsoft, Qualcomm and Cadence.

This emphasis on research collaborations with both the Public and Private sectors is a distinctive feature of Amrita. The President of India, His Excellency, Bharat Ratna, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam launched the Amrita- Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) joint initiative in “Village Resource Centers” on 6 July 2005 at the Ettimadai campus of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham. Other initiatives include the Amrita-Microsoft Center for Excellence in E-learning, Amrita – HP initiative on Wireless Sensor Networks, Amrita – Cadence initiative on VLSI technology and Amrita – Konkan Railway initiative on SkyBus Technology, Amrita – TIFAC center in Cyber security, Amrita – Bhabha Atomic Research Center (BARC) initiative in Information Security, to name a few.
