Introduction
Interactions between countries are growing exponentially in the globalized business environment of today. Even if a company is not going global, it may be either buying or selling to foreign firms or subsidiaries of foreign firms. The international and multi-cultural work environments of today provide new challenges to business managers. Current business magazines have often been focusing on Indian companies going global. Again, many corporates in India are staffed or headed by nationals from other countries. As business executives in these companies, your success will be influenced by your multicultural sensitivity, and your ability to understand both the challenges and the opportunities that these environments provide. The goal of this course is to expose you to a way of thinking that increases your ability to understand the influences of culture on organizational practices.
The course will cover:
• Communicating and negotiating across cultures
• The impact of culture on motivation and leadership
• Functioning of multinational teams
• Cross-cultural dimensions of marketing

Expectations from the students (Your contract with me!!)
I expect that each of you is in the class because you have an interest in this fascinating field of cross-cultural management. We will try and have fun while maintaining rigour in the class.
Here are some guidelines for the evaluation components:
Guidelines for Individual Paper
Identify your own key values, attitudes, behaviours which are shaped by your national culture, your gender, age, ethnic background, upbringing, caste, religion, etc. This could be accompanied by meaningful behavioural examples. Select any country and identify the cultural dimensions of your assigned country. Imagine that your organization has sent you for a one-year assignment to that country. Identify the challenges you are likely to face in your personal life living in your assigned country and what steps you will take to overcome them. Add any other personal reflections.
Original papers, where you integrate material you have read from websites and books with your own personal upbringing will be appreciated. References are a must. Papers where dimensions of culture and customs are blindly copied will be marked down. The paper should be about 8-10 pages long (double-spacing, font size 12).
Guidelines for Management Game
You have to design a management game which will test the cross cultural knowledge of participants. Games which test cross-cultural management skills will be valued more than games which just test general knowledge on cultures. The game should have a major component with a duration of less than 30 minutes so that it can be played in class (additional components may be created). Your group may focus on a particular region in the world if it wants. Complete documentation of the game is to be submitted so that it can be played by anyone even if group members are absent.
Case Write Up/ Case Presentation
Each group will have to submit three write-ups on cases (answers to specific questions given in the case) before the start of the class on which the case is to be discussed. Each group will be assigned the three cases at the beginning of the term. Each group will also have to present one assigned case before the class in any creative and interesting manner.
