Dr. Arvind Bhatnagar
Raksha – Palliative Care
Almost everyone has been endowed with a cause to work for, but very few take it with the Courage, Endeavour and Passion. Dr. Arun Bhatnagar is one of those few who, not only took his work with ardor, but also scored towards creating a supportive unit for the cause he is been fighting for. The Palliative Care Centre for Cancer-Raksha is his brain-child or rather his heart-child, so to say.
Dr. Bhatnagar’s talk on October 17, 2007 gave us all an insight on patients who have been abandoned by their family and friends or who have abandoned hope as well. He enlightened us on the various causes and hazards of cancer. He defines cancer not only as an uncontrolled growth of cells, but also as a state of mind. He questions the youth of today who carelessly savor the various carriers and accelerators of the disease like cigarettes. He also urges them to be cautious and self-judgmental. Apart from this, Dr. Bhatnagar also attacked certain myths about cancer such as breast cancer being prevalent only among women, side effects of chemo/ radiotherapy being unmanageable etc.
The Palliative Centre run by him cares for and protects those terminally ill patients who have lost all hopes in life against cancer. “Dying is painful and excruciating. Nothing can make it easier, but of course, something can be done to make them feel that they are still cared for as living beings”, says Dr. Bhatnagar. As a social activist, he was not only appreciated for his efforts, but also proved to be a great source of inspiration for the students who were really moved by the cause.
