COLLOQUIA

Dr. N. Gopalakrishnan

17th Aug., 2007

On the Colloquia meet on 17th of August 2007, Amrita School of Business (ASB) was alighted by Dr. N Gopalakrishnan, who is a scientist working for the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research, India. He is famous for his lectures aimed at rekindling the Scientific heritage of India. In 1999, he along with a few other Scholars, founded Indian Institute of Scientific Heritage. Gopalakrishnan holds a number of academic qualifications which includes Masters in Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Industrial Sociology and a D.Litt in Sanskrit. In the colloquia meet, he poured in a new perception of the word “Management” into the minds of the students. He blended the traditional management concepts of the “Bhagavad Gita” with the modern concepts of Management which gave an entirely new dimension to it. He started off by reminding the individuals that “every breath we take, takes us close to the graveyard”. In between our birth and death, we have to learn to manage not only time, but also people around us and ourselves. Bhagavad Gita - Chapter 6 - slogan 5 says that “You have to elevate, glow, march forward and achieve; and that achievement has to be gained by yourself. You yourself are your closest relative; if not properly used, you yourself are your enemy”.  He further added that Management cannot be taught by books. It is to be learnt. “Take 1/4th of knowledge from ASB; take 1/4th of your own knowledge; take another 1/4th by discussions with people and take the last 1/4th during the process of living, by way of addition, deletion, modification and correction”. Management is never the same. A good manager must be open to his environment. Everything that we see, hear and feel will teach us a lot of management principles and hence the ultimate aim of a manager is to collect as much information as possible and use them effectively. By listening to glorious and positive news, we will get ideas from everywhere. Every management is a communication, either directly or indirectly. He spoke of the “Hanuman Effect” which means “providing continuous motivation”. Then the “Abhimanyu Effect” tells that even from the fourth month of pregnancy, the baby in the womb of the mother develops the listening capability. A good manager must never put oneself in things which create stress and should always have a stabilized mind. One should possess an affirmative mindset, should consider that destruction is for construction and should change all negatives to positives. All gathered information should be converted to knowledge, then to wisdom, experience and finally should be implemented in LIFE. The “Chenna Theory” states that “each and every individual has a rotten part which we should not consider and then should take into account only the positives in them”. He then concluded the oration with pieces of useful guidelines for the students of ASB to become better managers of tomorrow.
