Overview of the functioning of TATA Steel
The colloquium on the 10th of October 2007 was brought to life by Mr. Rajamani who is working in one of the world’s renowned company ‘TATA STEEL’. “Management and Spirituality both being taught in the same campus” - that was how he defined Amrita School of Business. He started off by sharing with us a little bit of the company’s glorious past. He told us how Jamshedji Tata started a small company with little technical knowledge and how it reached where it is today. He talked about the visionary leader who saw what was happening and fore saw what will happen in the future. He fought for economic freedom of the country. His vision shaped the company. Mr. Rajamani talked about how Tata Steel is a knowledge-based, value-driven global enterprise. They are a knowledge based domain because they have expertise in all fields like marketing, operations, finance etc. He stated that the question is not on the number of people you have; but each person should be able to understand what is happening in their respective field and act accordingly; not only knowledge-based, but value-driven. He told us how we should define our values and should have a targeted approach with values attached to it. He told us that it requires tremendous courage to take a bull by the horn and it will take more than that to build India using enterprise money. Integrity, respect, trust, excellence are some the qualities that Tata values. He told us how these values were upheld and formed a foundation for the company’s work culture. He also gave us a rough sketch on the different strategies that the company uses for its expansion and growth. He asked us to have a vision in our lives and to strive forward to it. As a conclusion he reminded us that a company can have the technology, buildings and other resources; but it is a committed work force which can work as a team to lead the company forward. He told us that a vision is what can carry us forward and asked us to work with commitment towards it. He concluded by encouraging us to think of our future and expect the unexpected. He also asked us to have pre-notions about what should be done and what not to be done.
