Spatial Planning for Nature Conservation in Vu Quang Reserve
Roland Eve, Shobhana Madhavan , Vu Van Dzung

Published by: WWF Indochina Programme
Pages: 158
ISBN: 81-203-2650-4

Description
The 55,000 hectare Vu Quang Nature Reserve, located in Central Vietnam, came into the limelight when a new species of large mammal - the Pseudoryx Nghetinhensis (Saola) - was discovered in the region in 1994. The Saola is one of the world's rarest mammals, and is on the verge of extinction. This book presents a management plan for Vu Quang which aims to (i) conserve a network of protected areas, (ii) restore a valuable ecosystem, and (iii) promote sustainable livelihoods in surrounding communities. The authors adopt a framework of landscape ecology which allows for the integration of human parameters into the management of the Reserve, while taking into account spatial heterogeneity in the diverse landscape of Vu Quang. To conserve the unique biodiversity in Vu Quang, activities are proposed at multiple levels of spatial hierarchy - the commune level, nature reserve level, and the one million hectare network of protected areas at the Northern Annamite mountain range. This strategic approach provides a framework for understanding human impact on the environment. The book contains a workplan with detailed conservation and development activities at the different spatial scales.

The project, which is located in the triborder forest area (Lao, Vietnam and Cambodia), aims to restore habitat connections, while reducing poverty among people living in and near the conservation corridors. Xe Pian is one of the top ten conservation areas in terms of biodiversity in South East Asia. The objective of the consultancy was to work with villagers in identifying livelihood activities for reducing poverty through sustainable use of natural resources.
