Rakesh S. Katarey, Associate Professor
Rakesh S.Katarey, Associate Professor and Faculty in-charge, is a Master of Communication and Journalism from Osmania University, Hyderabad. An award winning documentary filmmaker with 18 years of field and academic experience, Mr. Katarey received the UGC Award for Technical Excellence in 1996 in New Delhi for his documentary titled Coleridge’s Lament on lake conservation. He was also the Episode Director of Bookfare, the award winning TV series at Tokyo’s SONY-ICD International Competition, Japan, besides being associated with many other international award-winning wildlife documentaries and television programmes. He is an invited expert on Film Studies at Film Clubs and has lectured on communication, film and news studies at premier institutions of communication design. Mr. Katarey is also a recipient of the British Council Sponsorship and was invited to teach the graduate and post graduate students of the Birmingham Institute of Art & Design, University of Central England, UK in 2005.
Besides setting up the Television Department at Manipal University, he was sent to UK to explore educational partnerships and develop exchange programmes. He represented his erstwhile University at educational promotional programmes outside India.Mr. Katarey has designed and developed many successful course modules including Film Art, Media Management and News Studies. He is invited to lecture regularly at nationalized bank management institutes and public limited companies on Brand Positioning and Communication. Besides, he has compiled and edited works on Communication Theory & Practice that are prescribed text books at recognized universities in India. In recognition of his achievements, he became the youngest member to serve on the Board of Studies in reputed universities.
The works of his television students have cornered high praise for their fine craftsmanship and story telling skills from eminent filmmakers and jury members including Ashutosh Gowariker and Mahesh Bhatt at festivals and picked many an award at reputed video festivals. His students occupy important positions in most of the reputed English and Hindi general entertainment, news and business channels and publications in the country including The Hindu, O&M, Lowe-Lintas, Radio Mirchi, The Times of India, NDTV, Times Now, CNBC etc. and at award-winning TV software houses. Besides his expertise in the area of rhetorical analysis of film and other cultural artefacts, Mr. Katarey is popular amongst students for blurring the boundaries between complex communication theory and sound communication practice.
Sridevi Purayannoor, Lecturer
Writing is a passion for Sreedevi. Journalism is right up to her street! With her passion for development issues, ethics, gender studies and spirituality, she has been writing on all these issues and many more. She has been associated with Amrita School of Journalism right from its conception. Initially, she was handling HR activities including student admissions and faculty recruitment. For the last two years, she has been interacting with the students on a wide range of media issues including ethics, development and value-based journalism. She has also been freelancing for top notch newspapers like The Hindu and various websites.
Sreedevi is a keen observer of developments around her and her humaneness motivates her in participating in humanitarian activities led by Amrita University and the Mata Amritanandamayi Math. In 2005, Sreedevi joined the institution’s drive for relief and rehabilitation of Tsumani victims. She is a graduate from Asian College of Journalism. She handles papers in Communication, Reporting, Media Ethics and Development Journalism at Amrita.
P. Vinod, Faculty, Graphics & Animation
Mr. P.Vinod is a well known graphic design and animation professional for over 10 years with simultaneous experience in teaching the subject..Mr.Vinod is qualified in the area of information Technology and Multimedia. He has taught at reputed universities and colleges in Coimbatore and has presented papers at professional seminars in his subject area. At Amrita, Mr.Vinod coordinates the Graphics and Animation stream.
S. B. Srinivasan, Faculty, Integrated Marketing Communication & Soft Skills
Mr. S. B. Srinivasan is a Postgraduate in Communication and a well known advertising professional with over 18 years in advertising practice and agency management at a very senior level. He was also the Sr. Vice President, Profad Advertising, a subsidiary of SPIC, an M.A. Chidambaram Group company. Mr.Srinivasan has handled many well known brands including Indian Terrain and Auto Press. He currently manages Strategion, an advertising and brand consulting firm at Coimbatore. Mr.Srinivasan is also Joint Secretary, Advertising Club, Coimbatore, and a member at many academic and professional bodies in the state.Besides, Mr. Srinivasan is an invited expert in the area of marketing communication, particularly advertising and brand positioning, at many reputed universities and colleges across southern India. At Amrita, Mr.Srinivasan coordinates the Integrated Marketing Communication stream.
Usha V., Faculty, Constitution, Polity & Law
Usha V. is a Postgraduate in Law and Psychology from Pondicherry with many rewarding years spent in practice. As a social activist, she continues to play a major role in the area of women’s rights and prohibition of gender determination tests.Ms.Usha is also the founder director of Mythreyi, the suicide prevention centre. She is Member, Ethics Committee, Vector Control Research Centre, Pondicherry and is a Resource Person at various university colleges in the state. She is also a legal advisor for many reputed nationalized banks, insurance and other public limited companies. Ms.Usha comes into Amrita as an expert in the area of Indian Constitution & Polity and Media Laws.
