Activities

•The IT departmental association, TITAN organized an Intra-collegiate student symposium, “TITANIQ 2006” on 29 August, 2006. The symposium consisted of various events like Multimedia, Poster Design, IT Quiz, Mixed Bag and Marketing. Prizes worth Rs. 10000/- were given to the participants, who numbered over 300. Mrs. Meena Kowsalya coordinated the programme. This event is organized every year and has emerged as one of the most popular student events in the campus. In addition to various seminars, TITAN also organizes a welcome party for freshers and farewell party and association valediction for outgoing students every year.

Genesis 2006 – Inter-collegiate Project Contest



The department of Information Technology of Amrita School of Engineering, Coimbatore along with the Coimbatore sub-centre of Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE) conducted "Genesis 2006", an inter-collegiate Onsite Project Contest on 11 October, 2006. The contest had three tracks in Image Processing, Data Structures and Networking. More than 175 students participated in the contest. Almost all the engineering colleges in the region like PSG, Bannari, Sri Krishna, VLB, Kongu, Park, Kumaraguru, Karpagam, Sasurie etc. were represented. Mr. Ranga Rajagopal, CEO, Acenet Technologies, Coimbatore inaugurated the event. Dr.V. Radhakrishnan, Director-Engineering of Amrita University presided over the event. Prof. K. Gangadharan, Chairman-IT and Prashant R.Nair, Asst Professor - IT distributed the prizes and certificates to the participants. Mrs. Bindu Jayakumar and Mrs. T.Punitha, Senior Lecturers of IT department, Amrita School of Engineering organized the contest.

31st ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) – ASIA PACIFIC REGION

Students from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay won first place in the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) Asia Pacific Region 2006 held at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Ettimadai, Coimbatore on 16 and 17 December, 2006. This event is sponsored by IBM. This is one of the premier and most popular computer programming contests in the world.

The 31th annual “battle of the brains,” for the Asia Pacific region, hosted by Amrita University at Coimbatore, challenged students to solve a semester's worth of computer programming problems under a grueling five-hour deadline. The IIT Bombay team goes to the ACM-ICPC World Finals championship, which will be held at Tokyo in April, 2007.

Amrita is conducting this prestigious event for the second time. In India, there are only two sites where the Asia Pacific event is held, the other site being the IIT Kanpur. This year, there were more than 53 teams and 250 student participants with representation from premier engineering colleges in the country, including IIT Madras, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, NIT Trichy, IIIT Hyderabad, Anna University and even colleges as far as Sikkim Manipal Insitute of Technology. There were also teams from Korea and Bangladesh.

On 16 and 17 December, 2006 at Ettimadai, these elite students from around the globe came together under the common language of code as they competed in a race against the clock to solve 7 complex, real world programming problems. On 16 December, 2006, the teams were exposed to the programming environment, a contest management software called Mooshak and they were given trial problems. On 17 December, 2006, the finals were held.

The second prize was won by Fr. Conceicao Rodrigues College of Engineering Mumbai. Information and Communication University, Daejeon, South Korea came third, East West University, Dhaka secured fourth place and College of Engineering, Guindy came fifth. Dr. C. Mohan, IBM Fellow and Chief Scientist of IBM India distributed the prizes. Dr. Venkat Rangan, Vice Chancellor of Amrita University presided over the awards ceremony. Dr. Vallath Nandakumar was the Contest Director. The event was organized by the Information Technology and Computer Science departments of Amrita School of Engineering, Amrita University under the leadership of Prof. K. Gangadharan, Chairman-IT and supported by Prashant R.Nair, Asst Professor-IT. The contest administration was done by the Centre of Excellence in Wireless of Amrita University under the leadership of Dr. Satya Sai Prakash, Associate Contest Director. Earlier, the online preliminary contest was held on 28th October 2006. The contest was conducted over the Internet. More than 80 teams participated in the prelims of which 60 teams were selected.
