The Department started functioning with the inception of Amrita Institute of Technology in November 1994. Initially, the role of the Department was to provide a strong foundation in Mathematics at the undergraduate level. With the Introduction of Post Graduate programmes in the engineering branches and research programmes in all the departments, the faculty got involved in handling special papers like Number Theory, Cryptology, Operations Research, VLSI algorithms and Pattern Recognition etc. Now, as a full fledged Department of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, steps are being taken to start Post- Graduate Programmes and M.Phil programme in Mathematics.
