Dr Ajit N. Babu who directs the Center for Digital Health at the Cochin campus of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham is Professor and Chairman for the Institute of Medical Informatics and Multimedia Education at the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS), Cochin.
After completing his MBBS at Trivandrum Medical College, Kerala, Dr Babu completed his post-graduate residency in internal medicine at North Shore University Hospital of Cornell University and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. During his training, he was the winner of the Syntex/MEDICINE award for excellence in clinical practice. He got a degree of Master in Public Health (MPH) from Saint Louis University (SLU) in 1998 and became a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP) in 1999. He also has had advanced training in medical informatics through the National Library of Medicine and the Marine Biological Laboratory at Wood's Hole, Massachusetts in 2000. Dr. Babu returned to India in 2004 to set-up the Institute of Medical Informatics and Multimedia Education at AIMS as well as the Center for Digital Health. He continues to retain faculty appointment at Saint Louis University.
Dr. Babu is American Board certified in Internal Medicine and has been a full-fledged academic practitioner in US for over a decade. He was chief of the SLU faculty group in primary care and medicine at the St Louis VA Medical Center since 1997 where he had daily exposure to one of the worlds best electronic medical record systems. He received an award from the hospital for outstanding leadership and was elected by the medical staff to the position of Secretary, the highest elected office. Dr. Babu was one of the directors of the SLU clinical skills center and course in physical diagnosis for undergraduates, and served in this capacity for a decade. He also serves as visiting faculty for the final year student course in Advanced Physical Diagnosis at Harvard University and the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, as well as at Jefferson University, Philadelphia. Dr. Babu has numerous publications in leading international journals, and multiple abstract and workshop presentations at international conferences conducted in the United States. He has served as a peer-reviewer for the Journal of General Internal Medicine and the Indian Journal of Medical Sciences and is a member of the Medical Computer Society of India as well as the Indian Association of Medical Informatics. Dr. Babu has authored a CD-ROM on cardiac auscultation that is in use worldwide, and forms a part of the curriculum for undergraduate medical students at Yale University. He has contributed to a chapter on cardiac examination in the textbook titled "Atlas of Adult Physical Diagnosis" published by Lippincott-Williams in 2005 and released in the US.
