In the course of the disease HIV may infect a variety of cell types. But the affinity of HIV for macrophages and T cells is found to be mainly important for disease development. Affinity of HIV is chiefly determined at the level of cellular entry through membrane fusion with CD4+cells. Successful entry also requires the presence of the suitable coreceptors. Different HIV strains may use different coreceptors for cellular entry and this decides which target cell types the virus will enter.

Dynamics between HIV and the macrophage population can be described by the simplest model of infection dynamics. Here in this paper we evaluate the in vivo dynamics of T cell and macrophage infectivity by HIV using mathematical models. The experiments recommend that HIV can multiply only in activated T cells while cell activation may not be essential for successful multiplication in macrophages.

These postulations lead to different conditions required to begin a constant infection in the two cell types. While constant replication in macrophages is obtained and if basic reproductive ratio of the virus, Vr, exceeds one, the extend of T cell infection will depend upon a complex balance between the host and the viral parameters and also the starting conditions.

More particularly, the replication rate of HIV desires to lie above a preset level and the immune action of the host below a certain limit for persistent T cell infection to be achievable.

Mathematical models predict that the macrophage infection is required for the successful proliferation of HIV in the initial phase of the infection. Acting as a pool, they allow the virus to progress towards improved replication kinetics and also from immune detection and thus providing the way for the rise of completely T cell tropic strains by means of the CXCR4 – co-receptors.

The currently prevalent agricultural production systems comprising both livestock and feedstock, adopt the just in time supply trend. The supply is regulated only when demanded. An agricultural network, being the main resource for our livestock needs a high degree of predictivity and certainty , in order to meet unforeseen emergencies. Movement of food stock and livestock from one farm to another, shortage of resource, outbreak of a disease, slaughter of diseased livestock and many other issues lead to the interruption of the normal production network. In this work, we propose to formulate a stochastic model for such production networks. This model will give us a picture of the impact of unforeseen disturbances on the routine network. The model also helps us predict the scope and potential of various other preventive measures for the same. The model is then subject to computational simulations by altering the parameters that stand for the disturbances.

Chemotaxis is an event where body cells, singlecellular and multicellular organisms decide their movements based to certain chemicals in their living environment. This is significant in nutrition, survival, reproduction as well as in normal function in these organisms. It has been also found out that mechanisms that permit chemotaxis can be effectively used in the field of cancer treatment. The basic principle behind the mechanism of chemotaxis is the concentration gradient.

Plain concentration gradients result in simple bacterial density configurations. In this paper, we propose a model for the mechanisms of chemotaxis based on the diffusion theory of suspended particles in solution. A differential equation illustrating the chemotactic migration of bacterial groups in a fixed exponential concentration gradient has been integrated using the suitable boundary conditions.

The solution predicts an original bacterial concentration in a particular concentration based on the final distribution of bacteria approaching in a time-independent state. The peculiarity of the stationary state has a particular implication, as it provides a direct hint to the behavior of the chemotactic force. Several new predictions related to the bacterial flow has been made with the help of model.

Drug resistance has become one of the major unease in the treatment of certain human communicable diseases. The most well known example is human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The strains that are resistant to one or multiple antiviral drugs have amplified in frequency and the patients have become infected with these resistant viruses making the therapies ineffective. This has been a major problem in the case of HIV infection. Various mathematical models of HIV infection have shown that the chance of producing a resistant variant before the beginning of therapy is higher than the chance of generation once therapy has been started. Prevailing mathematical modeling techniques of drug resistance are mainly focusing on the interactions between virus, target cells and infected cells, avoiding the reaction of immune responses.

Here in this paper we present a mathematical model that discovers the function of immune responses of drug-resistant mutants in vivo. We have found out that the capacity of drug-resistant virus variants to increase can remarkably depend on the quality of the immune response recognized. The model proposed that the increase in resistance is improbable if immune responses are retained above a threshold level during therapy. In addition, if the immune responses decrease quickly below a threshold during treatment, a drug-resistant virus will grow.

This shows an important difference between HIV, which disables immunity and for which immune responses have been identified to disappear during treatment, and viral infections such as rhinoviruses and influenza, for which such immune destruction is not present. The drug resistance is found to be a very big problem in HIV than in sensitive and mild infections.

The within-host dynamics of viral diseases like human immunodeficiency virus, hepatitis B and the like are greatly dependant on viral parameters like the basic reproduction number (R0) and infected cell life span. Since these parameters cannot be estimated directly, it becomes necessary to design mathematical models to determine the same. Here, such a model has been designed computationally to study the viral dynamics. Generally, the viral life cycle is proposed based on a few assumptions. Mathematical models designed concerning these assumptions would eventually give us underestimated or overestimated parameter values. These viral parameters are very important in diagnostic and therapeutic issues. Thus, it becomes important to achieve a proper estimation of their values. Hence, the effect of these assumptions on the viral parameters has to be studied, which has been carried out here. In essence, here, we have studied viral dynamics based on a mathematical model designed and also studied the degree of dependence of viral parameters on the assumptions of viral life cycle.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a new-fangled cancer treatment method for the treatment of Barrett’s esophagus with high-grade dysplasia, micro invasive lung cancer, and obstructing lung cancer. For type II photodynamic interaction, the quantity predictive of the PDT outcome is irreversible apoptosis or necrosis, which occurs on increase in the concentration of the singlet oxygen above a threshold in a cell. Coupled rate equations for molecular reactions between the oxygen, photosensitizer, intracellular receptors, and the light fluence rate were used to determine the concentration of singlet oxygen. In the macroscopic model, the light fluence rate follows a 3D diffusion equation for a given optical properties and the initial macroscopic photosensitizer and oxygen concentration distributions. For the photosensitizer and intracellular receptors, the time dependencies of the concentration were obtained. There is an increase in singlet oxygen production with increase in light fluence rate. The singlet oxygen distribution vs position due to scattering of light is obtained.

The introduction of anti-pathogenic trans-genes into insect populations, followed by an appropriate gene drive mechanism, is eventually being recognized as an effective technique to control and prevent the spread of insect transmitted human diseases like Malaria, Chikungunya and so on. The effectiveness of a trans-gene greatly depends on the genetic drive mechanism as well. The trans-genes incorporated are linked to selfish genetic materials, that act as the gene drives. A gene drive must be designed by considering various age related factors. Reproduction and mating of the insect species is age-dependant. The pattern of reproduction, age, degree and period of mating are all age-structured threshold that need to be defined while engineering a gene drive model. Here, we propose to engineer one such gene drive mechanism, taking into account all thresholds of age-structure.

Human pre-implantation embryo growth involves a lot of morphological and developmental variations, which make modeling of such a system equally ambiguous. Pre-implantation embryos have been observed to exhibit increased levels of apoptotic cells and also are subject to growth arrest in the very first week of development in vitro. The relation between these two risk factors has been indefinite. However, it has been proposed that apoptotic cells play a major role in leading to embryonic growth arrests. In this work, we propose to come up with a mathematical model to represent the pre-implantation embryonic development. From this model, the dependence of growth arrest on apoptotic cells can be affectively studied.

Synthetic rubber are polymers of monomers including isoprene, 1,3-butadiene, chloroprene, and isobutylene. These monomers are mixed in various desirable proportions and copolymerized to obtain a wide range of physical, mechanical, and chemical properties and are used in a wide variety of applications.

ML value is an index of the mechanical property of synthetic rubber. It is related to the averaged molecular weight of synthetic rubber products. In butadiene rubber production, the ML value should be controlled within 43 to 47. Too high ML values correspond to insufficiency of elasticity, while too low ML values correspond to low tensile strength of products. It has been found that there are five chief factors influencing the ML values in production.

Using PCA, the chief factors affecting ML value of butadiene rubber was found out. Samples were classified into three different classes based on the ML value. The samples were subjected to SVR and equation to find out the good quality of the rubber was found out.

ML = (19.046471)[X1]+(0.596816)[X2]+(0.118119)[X3]+(-0.431069)[X4]+(-0.086168)[X5], where X1, X2, X3, X4 and X5 are the chief factors affecting ML value and this can be used as the mathematical model for the optimal control of ML value in production.

The viral in-host dynamics of diseases like malaria can be studied from mathematical models. In this work, the model designed investigates the within-host population behavior of malaria. As in the case of any other virus, the malarial life cycle is also proposed based on assumptions. These assumptions place a negative impact on the estimated value of viral parameters such as growth rate, reproduction rate and so on. The degree of dependance of these assumptions on the parameters is studied and appropriate corrections made. An age-structured analysis further helps us reduce the impact of assumptions. This is because the viral parameters are all age-dependant.

This paper particularly deals with the matter of parasite dynamics in patients receiving anti-malarial drug therapy. One of the important characteristic of ‘Plasmodium falciparum’ which is the most active malaria parasite is sequestration. At the middle point of parasite development, the infected erythrocyte exits the circulating blood and attaches to endothelium in the microvasculature where the cycle gets completed.

It is very difficult to form a response model of the system to the antimalarial therapy without understanding the behavior of the sequestered parasite groups. The antimalarial drugs are generally known to operate mainly on different stages of parasite growth. It is possible that a drug that rapidly removes parasites from the peripheral blood might have an effect on slower removal of sequestered parasites. This is of particular importance since parasite sequestration is considered value to the pathology of severity in malaria. The death rates of the parasites are decided by the drug used and change significantly with the age of the parasite.

The mathematical model of the life cycle formulated in this paper divides the 48 hr life cycle of parasite into a finite number of compartments each representing an equal period of development time. The model is used to simulate the behavior of a parasite group over a period of time from the initial distribution of parasites across the various compartments of the model. The important parameters of the model are parasite death rates which are age dependent and can vary between each compartment.

The behavior of this model with different numbers of compartments is compared. The simulations show the number of parasites sequestered. Using this model with a small number of compartments there is significant variation in parasite development times and a proportion of parasites sequester and also the relationships between changes in parasite density, age structure and temperature.

In metallurgy, computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is emerging out as a very useful tool to improve process understanding and development. CFD makes use of computational modeling and mathematical formulations. This technique can be effectively used in metallurgical processes like aluminum reduction cells, ferro-silicon metal production etc. . Mathematical methods involved in solving metallurgical problems have to be excavated in the model.

Usually we use mathematical modeling to analyze processes involved with real world application. Processing of metals at high temperature in metal production and recycling involves application of complex multi phase fluid flow, where CFD modeling has been found to be highly effective.

In this research paper, mathematical modeling of ferro-silicon metal production has been done using CFD technique. The fluid dynamics of the alloy with different concentrations has been studied with the proposed model.

In the past few years drug delivery systems has improved moving from simple pills to controlled release of drugs. Controlled release drug delivery is a reliable method for delivering drug. This technique helps in maintaining and regulating the concentration of drug molecules in the blood and in specific tissues at desired levels. This ascertains the safety and efficiency of the treatment. Mathematical modeling plays an important role in establishing mechanisms of drug release. It also helps in providing general guidelines for the development of other systems. The mathematical model has been used to solve major parameters such as kinetics of absorption, distribution into and elimination out of the plasma. Studying controlled release of drugs in vivo is time consuming and difficult.
