Campus Trees

Coimbatore Campus of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham is located at Ettimadai Village, which is about 20 km from Coimbatore city towards west direction towards Palakkad on the NH-47 and further 2 km interior from the main road. The dry weather condition prevails for several months makes the area to be categorized under semi-arid climatic condition. Mean annual rain fall ranges between 400-500 mm, mostly obtained from North-West Monsoon between June to August and little rain from North-East Monsoon during October and November months. At most part of the Campus, the topography is undulated.

The Campus lies at the foot hill of Western Ghats of Coimbatore Circle. Forest type of the hill (Ayyamalai) range at this area is a combination of thorny scrub jungle and dry deciduous with rich plant biodiversity.

Trees Diversity

From the inception of Campus development during 1992, conservation of trees vegetation has been undertaken by the Ashram with the great efforts of Br. Abhayamrita Chaitanya, Chief Operating Officer. Further this trees conservation and planting is well supported and managed by Dr. M. Aravindakshan, Coordinator for Centre for Environmental Studies, Shri. M.G. Santhosh, technical Staff, Electronics & Communication Engineering Department. The existing native trees are conserved and most of the trees were planted. Massive number of trees were planted between 1996-2002. Tree saplings and seeds were obtained from Forest Departments, Forest Institutes, collected from forest areas and procured from forest nurseries.

Documentation of trees have been done by Dr. D. Kannan, Centre for Environmental Studies and trees identification was well supported by MG Santhosh, ECE Department and Kerala Forest Research Institute and Mr. Abhilash Damodharan, doing his M.Sc., Forestry at Forest College, Mettuppalayam.

Our Campus has a rich collection of about 150 species of trees, belonging to more than 50 families. The individual number of trees would be approximately hundred thousands. The Campus has rich biodiversity of trees, which foster other non-woody plants, birds and animals biodiversity. Most of the trees are at the mercy of rain and some trees are irrigated using the treated domestic effluent. Water conservation by natural means is taking place because of the dense tree cover.

Most of the trees in the Campus are indigenous and very few are exotic i.e., introduced to our Country from other Countries. A checklist of tree flora is given and the list is based on alphabetical order of the botanical name and not based on any system of classification.

Tree Database

Description for each tree species includes local names, its origin, general features of the tree and its location at the Campus to locate it by anybody with ease. Photos taken by Dr. D. Kannan, Centre for Environmental Studies and from Multimedia Department of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, at the trees of our Campus are included for the individual species, illustrating most of them and flower photos for most among them are separately available. Tree size particulars are provided, not based on the real measurement and the approximate value is given, which may differ from the normal tree size. Most of the Campus trees are labeled using painted iron boards tied using iron wire, after making few coils at 2 points at the wire piece to prevent the mechanical pressure of the wire, due to trees volume expansion.
