CSI Coimbatore Chapter Student Branch Convention 2007
The CSI Coimbatore chapter conducted its first Student Branch Convention on 10 August, 2007. The event was hosted and organized by the CSI Student Branch and department of Information Technology, Amrita School of Engineering, Amrita University, Coimbatore.
More than 130 students from 14 student branches of all premier universities and colleges in the region, attended the convention, which included software coding and IT quiz competitions. This event assumes great significance since this is the first time that such a conclave of student chapters has taken place in 25 years of the CSI movement in this region.
A team from Dr. Mahalingam College of Engineering and Technology, Pollachi won the first place in the software coding competition, while Coimbatore Institute of Technology secured second place. In the IT quiz competition, a team from Sri Ramakrishna Engineering College, Coimbatore emerged as winners, while Amrita school of Engineering, Coimbatore came second.
The awards ceremony was presided over by Dr. S. Arumugam, Regional Vice President, Region 7 of CSI (former Assistant Director of Technical Education, Govt of Tamil Nadu). Prof. Ernst Leiss, Professor of Computer Science at University of Houston presented the prizes to the winners. Prof. Leiss is a fellow of Association of Computer Machinery (ACM) and has authored several books and 150 research papers in the fields of Parallel Computing, Data Security, Programming Languages and Algorithm Analysis. The department of Indo-US initiatives of Amrita University facilitated this distinguished guest for CSI.
Dr. S. Arockiasamy, Chairman, CSI Coimbatore presented mementos to the various faculty coordinators and judges of the event. Mr. Ranga Rajagopal, Secretary, CSI Coimbatore addressed the gathering and called for greater coordination between the chapter and various student branches for organizing more events.
Prof. K. Gangadharan and Prof. N. Ramanathan, Chairmen of IT and Computer Science departments of Amrita, who are patrons of the Amrita CSI Student branch also addressed the gathering. The event was organized by a team led by Mr. Prashant R.Nair, Managing Committee (MC) member of CSI Coimbatore and Vice Chairman-IT of Amrita and supported by IT faculty members, Mr. Arun Kumar, Ms. R. Vidhyalakshmi and Mr. Sabarish. B.A. CSI Coimbatore MC members, Mr. Murali. R, Mr. M. Sundaresan and Mr. A. Sivabalan also graced the occasion.
Managing Committee of CSI Coimbatore
Mr. Prashant R.Nair, Vice Chairman –IT, Amrita School of Engineering, Coimbatore has been elected to the Managing Committee of the Coimbatore chapter of Computer Society of India for the period 2007-08. The installation of office bearers was held on 27 June, 2007 by Mr. K. Swaminathan, Centre Head, Robert Bosch, Coimbatore. Ms. R. Vidhyalakshmi, Lecturer-IT takes over as the Faculty Counselor of the Amrita CSI Student Branch.
CSI Day
On CSI day, 6th March, 2007, the faculty counselor of the Amrita CSI student branch and outstanding performers from Amrita in IT Quiz and Code Debugging were honored and felicitated by CSI.
Seminar on “Cyber Security”
 The Student Branch of Computer Society of India (CSI) of Amrita School of Engineering organized a seminar on "Indo-German Initiative in Cyber Security" by Mr. Richard Hartmann of the Technical University of Munich for the benefit of the CSI members at CSI Hall, Coimbatore on 13 December, 2006. Mr. Prashant R.Nair, Asst Professor - IT and Faculty Counselor of the CSI Student Branch presided over the function.
CSI Coimbatore Secretary Visits the Student Branch of CSI of Amrita School of Engineering, Coimbatore
Mr. Ranga Rajagopal, Secretary of CSI Coimbatore chapter visited the student branch on 10 October, 2006. Mr. Rajagopal had come to campus to inaugurate "GENESIS 2006" - an inter-collegiate Onsite Project Contest organized by the IT dept of Amrita School of Engineering, Coimbatore on 10 October, 2006.
TITANIQ 2006
The student branch of Computer Society of India (CSI) along with the IT departmental student association of Amrita School of Engineering, Coimbatore conducted an intra-collegiate student symposium, “TITANIQ 2006” on the 29 August 2006. The symposium consisted of various events like Multimedia, Poster Design, IT Quiz, Mixed Bag and Marketing. Prizes worth Rs. 10000/- were given to the participants, who numbered over 300. Dr. V. Radhakrishnan, Director-Engineering, Amrita University and Prof. K. Gangadharan, Chairman of IT department distributed the prizes and certificates. The symposium was organized by Mr. Prashant R.Nair, Faculty Counselor of CSI Student branch and Ms. Meena Kowsalya, IT Association Coordinator.
Seminar on "Trends in Wireless Network Security"
 The Student branch of the Computer Society of India (CSI) of Amrita School of Engineering, Coimbatore organized a seminar on "Trends in Wireless Network Security" by Dr. Ramalingam Sridhar, Professor in the Computer Science department at State University of New York, Buffalo, USA for the benefit of the members of the CSI Coimbatore Chapter at CSI Hall, Coimbatore on 9 August, 2006. Dr. S. Subramaniam, Principal, Sri Krishna College of Engineering, Coimbatore, who is also the Chairman of the CSI Coimbatore chapter presided over the function. Prof. K. Gangadharan, Chairman-IT, Amrita presented a memento on behalf of the Coimbatore chapter of CSI to Prof. Ramalingam Sridhar.
Launch of Student Chapter of Computer Society of India
The Student branch of the Computer Society of India (CSI) of Amrita School of Engineering, Coimbatore was launched by Mr. K. Jayaramakrishnan, Vice President of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) on 3 March, 2006. Mr. P.R Rangaswami., National Vice President of CSI presided over the function. Dr. V. Radhakrishan, Director-Engineering; Dr. T.R. Padmanabhan, Dean-Engineering; Prof. N. Ramanathan, Chairman-CSE; Prof. K. Gangadharan, Chairman-IT and Prof. P.N Kumar of CSE dept also spoke on the occasion. The office bearers of the Students Chapter were also installed during the function. Mr. Prashant R.Nair and Ms. R. Vidhyalakshmi of IT department have also taken charge as Counselors for the student chapter of CSI at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham .
