I went to the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md. for my undergraduate
degree in physics and obtained my PhD degree from the University of Maryland. My thesis concerned calculations
on the lifetime of the plasma oscillation of the electron gas in metals. While still a student, I worked at
the National Bureau of Standards in Washington, D.C., where I helped to keep the standard of illumination, the
light intensity emitted from a black body kept at the temperature of molten platinum. I held an internship at
the General Motors Research Laboratories where I worked on the problem of chemabsorption on metallic surfaces.
In 1972, I held the position of assistant editor of Physics Today, a publication of the American Physical
Society. I taught Physics at Merritt College in Oakland California, the University of Maryland at Catonsville,
and I was a visiting professor of physics at the Prince of Songkhla University in Thailand. I left physics for
a number of years to pursue my interest in art. I then entered the computer field where I worked as a
programmer for Chase Manhattan Bank and the Federal Home Loan Bank. I returned to academics to teach technical
mainframe computer topics at the New York University. I spent 20 years as Director of Academic Computing,
Chairman of the Academic Computing Department, and lecturer in physics and computer subjects at the Sullivan
County College. I met Amma in 1992.
