Dr. T.R Padmanabhan, Founder Chairman of the IETE Coimbatore sub-centre conducted a one-week workshop on “FPGA and Applications” from 8 to 16 August, 2007. More than 70 research scholars attended the workshop. Mr. Sampath Kumar, Senior Consultant, Tata Consultancy Services distributed certificates to the participants. Prof. K. Gangadharan, Chairman of IETE Coimbatore presided over the valediction function. Dr. M. Sethumadhavan also spoke during the occasion. CISCO seminar Prof. Bob Sloane, Head of Quality Assurance of Cisco – Asia Pacific region, who is based in Melbourne, Australia, conducted a one-day workshop on “CISCO Education Programmes” on 23 July, 2007. Faculty Development Programme on Microwave Engineering The IETE Coimbatore sub-centre conducted a Faculty Development Programme (FDP) on Microwave Engineering from 2 to 6 July, 2007. More than 30 faculty members in electronics and communication engineering from various engineering colleges attended the FDP. The FDP was inaugurated by Prof. Muthuraman Ramaswamy, Head of ECE at Sri Krishna College of Engineering, Coimbatore on 2 July, 2007. Prof. K. Gangadharan, Chairman of IETE Coimbatore sub-centre presided over the inauguration. Dr. V.P. Mohandas, Vice Chairman of IETE Coimbatore sub-centre presented a memento on behalf of IETE. The FDP was organized by Dr. M. Jayakumar, Hon Treasurer of IETE Coimbatore sub-centre and supported by Mr. Sabarish Narayanan, Executive Secretary and Mr. R. Ramanathan, Executive Treasurer of IETE Coimbatore. 5th Annual General Meeting of the IETE Coimbatore sub-centre The 5th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Coimbatore sub-centre of IETE was held on Thursday, 17th May, 2007 at 10:30 hours at CSI Hall, 2nd Floor, Vyshnav, Race Course Road, Coimbatore. Around 50 corporate members of the IETE Coimbatore sub-centre attended the AGM. The meeting started with a welcome address and opening remarks by the chairman of the sub-centre, Prof. K. Gangadharan. Prof. K. Gangadharan informed the AGM of the fact that due to recent membership drive, the sub-centre was well above the numbers to become a full-fledged centre of IETE. He also mentioned of the plans to petition headquarters with the request to formally ratify the sub-centre as a centre and also sanction an examination centre. He also added that in the recent year under review, the sub-centre was able to bring top ranking academicians from universities like University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign, USA; State University of New York, Farmingdale, USA; University at Buffalo, USA; Technical Universities of Munich and Berlin, Germany towards the cause of IETE. No other centre or sub-centre of IETE could boast of such a set of distinguished speakers. Asst Prof. Prashant R.Nair, Honorary Secretary of the IETE Coimbatore sub-centre then requested for the confirmation of Minutes of the 4th AGM. This was formally passed. Dr. V.P. Mohandas, Vice Chairman, IETE Coimbatore Sub-centre presented the annual report of activities and requested the 5th AGM for the adoption of the annual report. The annual report had earlier been sent to all members and was adopted formally by all members. This was followed by the adoption of audited balance sheet and income & expenditure account for the year ended 31 March, 2007, which was presented by Mr. Ramanathan R on behalf of Dr. M. Jayakumar, Hon Treasurer, who was indisposed due to a medical emergency. The statement of accounts was circulated to all members during the AGM. Asst Prof. Prashant R.Nair informed the AGM that the Messers M. Alagirisamy and co, one of the most reputed auditors in Coimbatore had been auditing the accounts of the sub-centre since the inception. He requested the AGM to approve their appointment for the year 2007-08. This was formally ratified. Dr. T.R. Padmanabhan, Immediate Past Chairman of Coimbatore sub-centre informed the need to co-opt more members to the Executive Committee. He called for nominations in this regard. Asst Prof. Prashant R.Nair commended the excellent service rendered by Mr. Sabarish Narayanan, who was an executive committee member during 2003-04 and student forum coordinator during 2004-05 and proposed his name for Executive Secretary. Prof. K. Gangadharan seconded this. Dr. K.A. Narayanan Kutty proposed Mr. C.K. Om Prakash of All India Radio to the executive committee. Prof. R. Sundararajan seconded this. Dr. V.P. Mohandas proposed Prof. P.N. Kumar to the executive committee. Mr. P. Sudheesh seconded this. Ms. Sasi priya proposed Asst Prof. R. Radhakrishnan to the executive committee. Dr. S.K Subramaniam seconded this. This was followed by the presentation of the activities report and future plans by the Student Forum coordinators, Mr. Sathish Kumar of Amrita School of Engineering and Asst Prof. R. Radhakrishnan of Sri Ramakrishna College of Engineering. Prof. Ramesh Kumar. P of KSR College of Engineering, Tiruchengode and Prof. P. Vetrivelan & Prof. K.S. Kannan from SNS College of Technology, Coimbatore requested the support for setting up student forums in their colleges. The application forms were distributed and Prof. K. Gangadharan elucidated on the procedure and promised all support. Dr. S.K. Subramaniam formerly with British Telecom, London and now Vice Chairman of IETE Coimbatore sub-centre then led the discussion on various issues for deliberation with the permission of the chair. In particular, he requested all the members to help in scouting of a suitable location for housing the centre in the heart of Coimbatore city. Dr. T.R. Padmanabhan also informed the AGM of his plans to expand the workshop series on “PIC Microcontrollers”. He had already conducted four such workshops and the response was very good. Proposals were invited from college student forums and members for organizing events. Mr. C.K. Om Prakash volunteered to offer the All India Radio hall in Coimbatore for conducting events. This was welcomed by all members as the location was very close to the city centre. Finally the vote of thanks was proposed by Asst Prof. Prashant R.Nair, Hon Secretary, IETE Coimbatore Sub-centre. Workshop on Microcontrollers Mr. M. Karthikeyan, Field Application Engineer, Microchip conducted a one-day workshop on “Microcontrollers” on 30 April, 2007. Dr. T.R. Seminar on “Network Security” Prof. Anja Feldmann of the Technical University of Berlin, Germany conducted a seminar on “Network Security” on 4 April, 2007. Prof. K. Gangadharan, Chairman of IETE Coimbatore sub-centre presented a memento on behalf of IETE. Dr. M. Sethumadhavan, Head of TIFAC-CORE in Cyber Security of Amrita University, Coimbatore presided over the seminar Inauguration of IETE Students Forum at Sri Ramakrishna Engineering College, Coimbatore IETE Students Forum at Sri Ramakrishna Engineering College, Coimbatore was inaugurated on 21 March, 2007 by Prof. K. Gangadharan, Chairman of IETE Coimbatore sub-centre. Asst Prof. Prashant R.Nair, Hon Secretary presented mementos to the staff-in charge, secretary and college. Prof. K. Thinappan, HOD/ECE, Sri Ramakrishna Engineering College, Coimbatore welcomed the gathering. Dr. M. Rangasamy, HOD/EIE presided over the function. Asst Prof. Radhakrishnan has taken charge as the faculty coordinator of the student forum Seminar on “Broadband Wireless Technologies” Mr. A. Ganesan, Chairman of IETE Chennai centre conducted a seminar on “Broadband Wireless Technologies” on 22 January, 2007. Prof. K. Seminar on “Higher Education in USA” The Coimbatore sub-centre of IETE organized a seminar on “Higher Education in USA” by Dr. V. Raju, Director – Science and Technology, College of Technology, State University of New York, Farmingdale, USA on 19 January, 2007. Prof. K. Gangadharan, Chairman of IETE Coimbatore presented a memento on behalf of the sub-centre. The IETE Students forum members were greatly benefited by this seminar by an eminent academician from USA. Seminar on “Higher Education in Germany” The Coimbatore sub-centre of Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE) organized a seminar on “Higher Education in Germany: Opportunities and Challenges” by Mr. Vinay Aggarwal, Faculty, Technical University of Berlin, Germany on 9 January, 2007. Prof. K. Gangadharan, Chairman of IETE Coimbatore presented a memento on behalf of the sub-centre. The IETE Students forum members were greatly benefited by this seminar Workshop on PIC Microcontrollers Dr. T.R. Sankhya 2006 - Mathematics Symposium
The IETE Coimbatore Sub-centre along with the mathematics department of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham Deemed University, Coimbatore organized a Mathematics symposium, "SANKHYA-2006" on 15 September, 2006. The various events included Quiz Programme in Mathematics, Number Challenge and Treasure Hunt in Mathematics. The symposium had more than 300 participants. Prof. K. The IETE Coimbatore sub-centre sponsored “TITANIQ 2006” a student symposium held at Amrita University, Coimbatore on 29 August, 2006. The symposium consisted of various events like Multimedia, Poster Design, IT Quiz, Mixed Bag and Marketing. Prizes worth Rs. 10000/- were sponsored by the sub-centre. Prof. K. of Munich, Germany conducted a seminar on “Security in Peer-to-Peer
Systems” on October 27, 2006. Dr. V.P. Mohandas, Vice Chairman of IETE
Coimbatore sub-centre presided over the function. Prof. K. Gangadharan,
Chairman of IETE Coimbatore presented a memento on behalf of the
sub-centre. Mr. Hartmann has come to Amrita as part of an Indo-German
project at the TIFAC CORE in Cybersecurity with Dr.M. Sethumadhavan.
The department of Information Technology of Amrita School of Engineering, Coimbatore along with the Coimbatore sub-centre of Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE) conducted "Genesis
2006", a Regional Onsite Project Contest. The contest had three tracks in Image Processing, Data Structures and Networking. More than 175 students participated in the contest. Almost all the engineering colleges in the
region like PSG, Bannari, Sri Krishna, VLB, Kongu, Park, Kumaraguru, Karpagam, Sasurie etc. were represented. The first prize with a cash award of Rs.5000/- was won by a team from VLB College of Engineering, while a
team from Bannari Institute of Technology won the second prize and cash award of Rs. 2500/-. All the prizes were sponsored by IETE.
Mr. Ranga Rajagopal, CEO, Acenet Technologies, Coimbatore inaugurated the event. Mr. Rajagopal is also the secretary of the Coimbatore chapter of Computer Society of India (CSI). Dr.V. Radhakrishnan, Director-Engineering of Amrita University presided over the event. Prof. K. Gangadharan, Chairman-IT and Chair of IETE Coimbatore distributed the prizes and certificates to the participants. Mrs. Bindu Jayakumar and Mrs. T.Punitha, Senior Lecturers of IT department, Amrita School of Engineering organized the contest.
A one-day seminar on “Security in Mobile Networks” was organized by Coimbatore sub-center of Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE) and Amrita School of Engineering, Amrita University, Coimbatore on 8 March, 2006. A student project contest was also conducted along with this seminar. More than 25 innovative projects in the areas of Biometrics, Fingerprint Identification, WAP, Wireless LAN, Smart Cards, Robotics, Microcontrollers and Embedded Systems were presented during the one-day seminar. More than 350 participants from engineering colleges in and around Coimbatore participated in the seminar. Mr. V. Appakutty, Chief Engineer, All India Radio and Doordarshan, Chennai inaugurated the seminar and delivered a talk on “Cyberlaws”. Dr. M. Sethumadhavan, Head - TIFAC-CORE in Cybersecurity of Amrita University delivered a talk on “Information Security”. Dr. T.R. Padmanabhan, Dean - Engineering, who is also the Chairman of the Coimbatore center of Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE) presided over the function. Dr. V. Radhakrishnan, Director-Engineering, Amrita University and Dr. V.P. Mohandas, Chairman-ECE, Amrita University distributed prizes worth more than Rs. 10000/- (Rupees Ten thousand only). Dr. Narayanan Kutty of ECE dept at Amrita School of Engineering also spoke on the occasion.
