The workshop examined the current state of research in Computational Linguistics and Machine Translation in Indian Languages. Computational Linguistics/Natural Language Processing explores the possibilities of understanding and exploiting linguistic theories from various perspectives and apply them in developing systems that can process natural languages. Of late the field has attracted significant attention following the development of Information technologies like Text classification, Document retrieval, Question Answering, Natural Language Interfaces, Machine Translation, etc. Compared to work done in English and few other foreign languages, Tamil NLP research is still in its infancy and has to go a long way to address the IT needs of Tamil community in India and across the world. Lack of sharable linguistic resources, standardization, etc have been impediments to sustainable research in this area.
