9th Institution Day Celebrations

Duty of an Educational Institution is to instill values in students – Dr. E. Balagurusamy

Dr E Balagurusamy, Vice Chancellor of Anna University, said, “The duty of an educational institution is to develop a strong value system. Character building is an integral part of the educational system. I am very happy that Amrita University imparts value-based education.” Dr. Balagurusamy was speaking as the chief guest for the 9th Institution day celebrations of Amrita School of Engineering, the flagship institution of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham Deemed University at Ettimadai, Coimbatore.

“They constitute the cream of the society. Yet they came forward to serve people when the tsunami struck,” said Brahmachari Abhayamrita Chaitanya, the Chief Operating Officer of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham. He was referring to the students of Engineering, Management and Journalism of Amrita University while delivering the presidential address for the function at the open-air auditorium of Amrita Varsity at Ettimadai, Coimbatore on Thursday, 10 March, 2005. Perhaps we are the only university not situated in cities like Chennai, who had more than 300 youngsters staying with the affected people, serving food, providing medical help and helping in constructing shelters. He also announced that Mata Amritanandamayi Math is to build 5,000 houses for the tsunami-affected people in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Swamiji said this is the largest housing project in India by any agency.

Dr. T.R. Padmanabhan, Principal presented the annual college day report. He highlighted the various achievements of the students and staff at the school of engineering. This includes numerous university ranks, which include first ranks in Production Engineering, Polymer Engineering, MCA and M.Tech VLSI. The 2001-2005 Batch and 2002-2006 B.Tech. (Engineering batches affiliated to Anna University) had secured the BEST results in the University out of more than 250 and odd colleges affiliated with Anna University. He also added that Amrita had the best placement record in the region. More than 805 students had been placed in the last academic year alone in more than 50 top-notch companies in India and abroad.

Prizes for academic and cultural proficiency to over 300 students were presented during the function. Anandamayi Team was presented the overall championship for Amritotsavam. Jyothirmayi team was presented the runners-up trophy. Dr. P. Venkat Rangan, Vice Chancellor, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Dr. Bharat Jayaraman, Director-Engineering and Dr. V. Radhakrishnan, Director-Research also spoke during the function. Prof. R. Subba Rao, Chairman, Dept of Polymer Engineering welcomed the gathering. Prof. K. Gangadharan, Chairman, Dept of Information Technology introduced the chief guest to the gathering and Mr. Prashant R.Nair, Senior Lecturer-IT proposed the vote of thanks.
