International Doctoral Symposium – first of its
kind, marks the launch of a world-class PhD programme at Amrita
University, Coimbatore
 An International
Doctoral Symposium in “Computer and Information Science
Engineering” marked the launch of a world-class doctoral
programme at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham (Deemed University), Ettimadai,
Coimbatore on 19th December, 2004. This type of research conference,
wherein PhD scholars present their research findings before a
distinguished panel of international figures in Computer Science
and Engineering, was held for the first time in the country. This
pioneering scholarly gathering saw the participation of 80 research
scholars from all the premier engineering institutions in the
country like IITs, IISc etc.
 The
distinguished panelists for the symposium included Dr. Satish
Tripathi, Vice Chancellor of University at Buffalo, State University
of New York, USA, who is one of the highest ranked Indian academicians
in USA and Padmashri Dr. N. Balakrishnan, Chairman of the Division
of Information Sciences, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.
 The
Doctoral programme of Amrita Varsity was launched by Dr. N. Balakrishnan.
More than 100 people have registered at Amrita for pursuing Ph.D.
Inspired by Mata Amritanandamayi Devi (AMMA), more than 15 top
professors and academicians from reputed universities world wide
like Harvard, Berkeley, Wharton, University of California, Los
Angeles (UCLA), Kellogg, New York University, INSEAD, Cornell
etc. have joined the Amrita university faculty and are actively
involved in research and PhD guidance. One of the first doctoral
students, Mr. V. Ponraj, Director (Technology Interface) in the
President of India’s office presented his research theme
over satellite from Rashtrapathi Bhavan. Dr. Satish Tripathi launched
the latest Amrita University website, www.amrita.edu
The university website is one of the most popular academic
websites in the country with more than 10 million hits in the
last one year. A video describing all the facilities and activities
of all Amrita campuses was also unveiled by Dr. Satish Tripathi.
Dr. Bharat Jayaraman, Director of Engineering, Amrita University
moderated the panel discussion by the eminent speakers on “How
to Build World Class Universities in India”. Dr. Venkat
Rangan, Vice Chancellor welcomed the gathering and Brahmachari
Abhayamrita Chaitanya, Chief Operating Officer enlightened the
gathering on the vision and future plans of the university.
