Launch of Amrita-TCS Joint Initiatives

Shri S. Ramadorai, CEO of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) visited the Ettimadai, Coimbatore campus of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham on 13 September, 2004. He delivered a talk on "Latest Trends in IT Industry" , which was relayed over satellite to all the campuses of Amrita Varsity, as part of the Distinguished Lecture series.

The highlight of the function was the launch of the Amrita-TCS joint initiatives in Education, Research and Community Development. This was done by a formal exchange of Memoranda of Understanding by Shri Ramadorai and Dr. Venkat Rangan, Vice Chancellor of Amrita University. As part of this joint venture, TCS and Amrita will collaborate on setting up centers of excellence in Biomedical Engineering and Wireless Sensor networks.

TCS will also support the implementation of 5 Village Resource Centers (VRC). VRC is a unique concept developed by Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), which envisages transformation of rural communities by providing all the infrastructure and facilities for tele-education, tele-medicine, emergency and disaster response systems. VRC will also provide vital information and satellite pictures for the benefit of communities like farmers, fishermen etc.

Brahmachari Abhayamrita Chaitanya, Chief Operating Officer of the university presided over the function. Shri Ramadorai also released a book, "Insight into Wavelets" authored by Dr. K.P Soman and Dr. K.I. Ramachandran of the Center of Excellence in Computational Engineering and Networking (CEN) and published by Prentice Hall India. On behalf of the university, Dr. V. Radhakrishnan, Director of Research presented a memento to Shri Ramadorai. A banquet in honor of Shri Ramadorai was also held in the university guest house, which was attended by senior ISRO scientists and prominent industrialists of Coimbatore.
