Research at AmritaFunded by the Government of India's TIFAC Mission Reach Program and by Media Lab Asia, the Amrita Insulin Pump project aims to develop an inexpensive biomedical device for the precise, personalized and continuous delivery of insulin in subcutaneous manner, so that diabetic patients may be able to control and manage the disease.

Currently, in spite of being a life saving device, the insulin pump is too expensive for the majority of diabetic patients in India. With the success of this project, a cost-effective insulin pump that is on par with the best in the world, should be placed within easy reach of poorer patients world-wide.

The focus of this phytochemistry project is the study of Seabuckthorn, a Himalayan plant. Seabuckthorn berries are famous among practioners of traditional medicine for their salubrious affects on pulmonary, gastrointestinal, cardiac, blood and metabolic disorders. The extraction of phyto-compounds and the study of their nutraceutical and pharmaceutical properties is the goal of this project.

Research at AmritaThe Amrita-TBI Global is a platform offering multiple modes of communication including video and audio conferencing as well as other collaborative tools. This project has the support of the NSTEDB. The goal is to put into place a multimedia collaborative network that connects the various Technology Business Incubators (TBIs) all over India.

In addition, the scope of the project includes providing access to a knowledge base, prominent venture capital and other expert resources all over the world.

Research at AmritaThe project focusses on the research and development of a wireless telematics platform for transportation systems. The platform constitutes Vehicle On-Board Units, a Wireless Mesh Network and Messaging System, Gateways and highly scalable Backend Systems.

Key technologies include a T-Mesh, MiTRA OBU, MiTRA TCM System, Graphical Dynamic Messaging Unit, Text Mode Dynamic Messaging Unit and Ignition Aware Power Supply Unit. A patent application titled 'In-Vehicle Appliance and System for Providing Multimedia-Infotainment for a Transport Network' has been filed for some of the research completed as part of this project.

This project is carried out in collaboration with CDAC, Pune as well as Leiden University, Netherlands. It is a part of a huge effort to successfully develop an engine that will translate English to Indian Languages. The Centre is currently developing an engine that will convert English text to Tamil with proper grammar and syntax.

Research at Amrita22q11 microdeletion is the most frequently reported interstitial deletion, occurring in 1/4000 live births. It can result in more than 80 different kinds of birth defects and malformations in varying combinations and varying severity, collectively called ‘22q11 microdeletion syndromes’.

The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of 22q11 microdeletion among patients with conoventricular heart defects in our population, study the spectrum of phenotypic abnormalities and the correlation between the phenotype and genotype and study the inheritance patterns.

Research at AmritaHead and Neck Cancer is a leading cause of death and disfigurement around the globe; annual global incidence is estimated to be about 9,00,000. Nodal metastasis is an important prognostic marker in head and neck cancer. Lymphatic metastasis generally follows an orderly and predictable progression of involvement beginning with the sentinel lymph node.

Lymphoscintigraphy has now been established as a reliable and a less invasive technique of identifying the first tumor-draining lymph node (sentinel node). This study compares the effectiveness of lymphoscintigraphy and assesses the effectiveness of frozen section examination for pathological evaluation of sentinel lymph node. It also seeks to identify the significance of submicroscopic metastasis.

Under this project different classes of nanoparticles are evaluated for their toxicity in a comprehensive fashion to include cytotoxicity, inflammatory responses, cancer-causing potential or tumerogencity, biodistribution and excretion. The project also focuses on methods of pacifying the toxicity of nanoparticles.
