“We never imagined a life like this.”    The first batch of participants in the Amrita Rural Internship program fanned out across India in the summer of 2014 and reported the experience to be one of the most memorable of their lives. A part of Amrita SeRVe, Amma’s village rehabilitation project, the internships were also Amma’s idea. She described the project as a way for young people to help villagers find solutions to their problems and for the young people to gain understanding of the challenges faced by their fellow countrymen and women, as well as their strong values and resilience.  Students and staff from many departments participated, including the Schools of Engineering (Mechanical, Chemical and Computer Engineering), Business, Social Work, Physical Education and English, as well as CIR and CREATE.

Amritapuri campus observed the World Car-Free Day by conducting a bicycle rally and 10 km road run from Karunagappally to the campus. Over 800 students and 200 faculty members volunteered took leadership for the campaign which started at 8:30 a.m. from Karunagappally to Amritapuri. The highlight of the day is that no one would come to the campus by private car or bike on that day. Day scholars shall avail of public transport facilities or use bicycles to reach the campus. The objective of the campaign is to promote the use of public transportation, car sharing and emission–free vehicles as an effort to address the crisis of environmental pollution. Contributing towards a ‘Greener Tomorrow’ is drawn inspiration from Amma’s words on our duties and responsibilities towards the protection and preservation of our Mother Nature. The Times of India Chennai edition of today (Friday, September 19, 2014) has erroneously titled an article as Amrita university fake job scam, whereas the article is concerned about an Institute of Hotel Management in Chennai that uses Amritha in its title, but is absolutely UNRELATED to Amrita University headquartered in Coimbatore. Amrita University is of international academic and research repute and has no programs in hotel management whatsoever, and never indulges in any such fake job practices even in slightest manner. Times of India has accepted its grave error in branding the Hotel Managment Institute as Amritha University, and Times of India has agreed to retract the report and publish a correction in tomorrow's edition.  September 19, 2014 Amrita University

The country's 68th Independence Day was celebrated with great fervor at Amrita University’s Amritapuri Campus. The 15th of August is a day like no other in the memory of Indians. It is the day we honor the memory of our ancestors and the sacrifices they made for our motherland, and above all, it reminds us of the true value of our freedom. Furthermore, on the day of independence, Amrita Sanjeevani, the Students Seva Association of Amrita University’s Amritapuri campus, under the guidance of Amma, took an initiative to free our environment from the accumulating waste that burdens our Mother Earth. Taking a small step, Amrita Sanjeevani introduced the Independence Day cleanup drive to remove the waste from nearby surroundings so that it may be recycled, or at the very least, better disposed of.  The cleanup drive took place in the immediate vicinity of the campus and was inaugurated by Sheela Sarasan, President, Clappana Grama Panchayat, Oachira Block, Kollam, Kerala after the national flag hoisting ceremony.
