Abstract :
Wireless sensor networks are one of the fastest emerging fields which have gained immense attention for its application to critical and emergency situations. Amrita university is applying wireless
sensor networks to real-life landslide monitoring and detection scenarios. This implementation is bringing together scientists from diverse fields such as geology and geophysics, and mechanical, computer, electrical, electronics, and communication engineering
to save human lives, preserve the environment and mitigate property damage. This talk will discuss various issues involved in designing such a network.

Invited to work with the WWF-Greater Mekong, Laos Country Programme as a consultant for village livelihood development in the Xe Pian ? Dong Houa Sao Biodiversity Conservation Corridor Initiative. The project, which is located in the triborder forest area (Lao, Vietnam and Cambodia), aims to restore habitat connections, while reducing poverty among people living in and near the conservation corridors. Xe Pian is one of the top ten conservation areas in terms of
biodiversity in Southeast Asia. The objective of the consultancy was to work with villagers in identifying livelihood activities for reducing poverty through the sustainable use of natural resources. The duration of the assignment was from April 20 ? May 18, 2007.
