The Department of Chemistry started functioning on Amritapuri campus in 2002. Today this department enjoys the status and privilege of a well-flourishing inevitable academic entity of this campus, which offers about 40 courses on vivid, advanced and applied areas of Chemistry and   Environmental Sciences for both Masters and undergraduate programs which are handled by 17 expert members of faculty, many of them with PhD degrees from reputed institutions like IISc (Bangalore),  IIT (Bombay), IIT (Madras), CSIR-NCL (Pune), CSIR-NIIST, CUSAT, MG University and having post-doctoral research and teaching experience from some of the top universities of  USA, Germany, Japan, UK, France and Italy. In 2008, the Department started post-graduate programs in Chemistry with an intake of 20 students. Five-year Integrated MSc (Chemistry) course was initiated in 2012 with intake of 40 students and currently there are about 200 registered students for this Masters’ program alone. Active research programs in all branches of Chemical Sciences have been going on since 2004. At present, there are 12 research scholars who are registered for PhD programs and pursuing research in the department. The department also offers science elective courses for several engineering programs during higher semesters and core electives to post-graduate students. The science electives are offered to cater to the needs of the various streams of engineering and they are well received.
