Our vision to equip the learners with essential language skills vital for employability, while instilling in them the maturity for aesthetic enjoyment, for understanding and appreciating values – social, cultural, and spiritual so that they are moulded into responsible human beings.

The department was started in the year 2004. Some of the important courses offered are: Communicative English, Professional and Technical Writing, Business Correspondence, Insights into Life through English Literature. The department became full-fledged with the commencement of the 5 year Integrated MA English language and literature program in 2012. A high-point of our M. A. Program is that the research project encourages individual initiative and self-study on the part of the students. Emerging areas of study with an array of specialized electives make for an M. A. program that is a mix of the conventional and the new. We have a fully equipped language lab. It is a network based teaching software that facilitates teaching process, adds efficiency to learning. Prayaana is the dept. literary association.

The Integrated MA at present has 5 batches and the first batch is now in the 10th semester.

Faculty and strength

Dr. P. V. Ramanathan, Chairperson, English, School of Arts and Sciences, Amritapuri, joined Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham in 2005. He has been instrumental in setting up the then-fledgling Department of English on the Amritapuri campus. He has instituted several staff training programs as well as a guest lecture series. He received Ph. D. and M. Phil. degrees from the University of Madras. He came to Amrita from the Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda College in Chennai where he taught for nearly three decades. At Amrita, Dr. Ramanathan is guiding several Ph. D. students.His current areas of interest are English Language Teaching, Literature, Religion in Literature and Religious Poetry. He has presented several papers at international and national conferences and seminars in these areas.Dr.Ramanathan is a member of the English Language Teachers' Association of India (ELTAI) and the Comparative Literature Association of India (CLAI).

The department has 2 faculty members who are specialized in various areas like American Literature, Canadian Literature etc.


Prayaana is the English literary association to promote knowledge of, and scholarly interest in various literary genres and also focuses on extra-curricular activities on the campus. The club organizes literary weeks comprising debate, quiz and creative writing competitions and also various contests aiming at developing the personality of students. Invited talks by various eminent scholars are also conducted on a regular basis.

Student Achievements

We are proud of our students' many accomplishments. Many of our students who completed the three year degree programme have got admission for Post-graduate studies at various prestigious institutions in India including English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU), Hyderabad, Pondicherry University, Central University of Tamil Nadu etc.

  • Rohan Manoj who graduated in English Language and Literature got admission for Linguistics at University of York, England. He has published an article titled “High, There, On the Hare-Heeled Winds”: Demonstrating the Influence of. Hopkins in the Selected Works of Dylan Thomas in The Criterion: An International Journal in English.
  • Sree Reshmi R. of final year Int. MA qualified the UGC-NET for eligibility for lectureship and research.
