Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS), Kochi, under the aegis of Kerala Orthopaedic Association and Cochin Orthopaedic Society, conducted the Amrita Spine Course 2014 on November 2. The seminar focused on lumbar degenerative disc disorders (low back pain and related diseases). Honorable Minister for Fisheries, Ports and Excise, Shri K. Babu, inaugurated the function and released the public awareness brochures on low back pain and scoliosis. Prof. Arvind Jayaswal, Professor of Orthopaedics, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi was the key note speaker. More than 100 delegates from Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andra Pradesh attended the event.
Various treatment modalities for disc prolapse and back pain, including microsurgery and minimally invasive spinal instrumentation, were discussed by the panel of experts which included Prof. Arvind Jayaswal, AIIMS, New Delhi; Dr. Sajesh K. Menon, AIMS; Dr. Krishnakumar R., AIMS; Dr. Srijith Padmanabh, Mangalore and Dr. Mohammed Niyaz, Mangalore.
“Low back pain affects people of all ages, from children to the elderly, and is a very common health problem worldwide and a major cause of disability. Inter-vertebral disc prolapse and related spinal disorders result in activity limitation,” noted Dr. Sajesh K. Menon, Professor and Head of the Department of Neurosurgery, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi.
“Leg pain or sciatica due to inter-vertebral disc prolapse can be severe and there are micro-surgical options to relieve the pain. One has to carefully examine and evaluate the patients to identify causes other than disc prolapse for sciatica,” said Dr. Krishnakumar R., Associate Professor, Spine Division, Department of Orthopaedics, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi.
