The Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Amrita School of Engineering, Coimbatore organized an international conference on Embedded Systems (ICES 14) from July 3-5, 2014. The prime objective of the conference was to garner researchers all over the world working in the emerging area of embedded systems and providing a platform to express ideas in this domain. The conference also provided an insight to open ended problems in the field of embedded systems.

The event was organized in association with KTH, Sweden, MDH, Sweden and technical sponsor IEEE. A preconference tutorial on two embedded system platforms, viz. Wind River Vx Works and TI C 2000, were conducted by Mr. Rajesh Lalwani, Wind River Systems and Srujan Babu G., Corel Technologies.  

On July 3, 2014 a preconference tutorial on two embedded system platforms, viz. Wind River Vx Works and TI C 2000, were conducted by Mr. Rajesh Lalwani, Wind River Systems and Srujan Babu G., Corel Technologies. With participation of around 34 people, the tutorial provided an insight into the intricacies of Wind River Vxworks Real Time Systems. TI C 2000 being a more popular controller with academia had an attendance of 26 participants. The wide challenges of programming TI C2000 were formally conveyed to participants by Mahesh G. S., Cranes Software followed by a contest on TI C2000 programming.

Addressing the delegates during the inaugural ceremony, Dr. P. Venkat Rangan,  Vice Chancellor, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, highlighted the significance of embedded systems and emphasized the need of such a conference. Dr. T. N. Padmanabhan Nambiar, Former Chairperson, Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Amrita School of Engineering welcomed the gathering. Dr. K. C. Sindhu Thampatty, Chairperson, Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Amrita School of Engineering, delivered the presidential address. 

Dr. S. Krishnamorthy, Registrar, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham dwelt upon the role of Embedded Systems in daily lives. Dr. Rajeev Thottapillil, Professor, KTH, Sweden expressed his happiness to be a part of the conference. 

Dr. Sasikumar Punnekkat, Professor, MDH, Sweden articulated his ardent desire to participate in the conference. Prof. K. Gangadharan, President, Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE) Coimbatore and Chairperson at Department of Information Technology, Amrita School of Engineering discussed the role of IETE and lauded the department for organizing such a conference. Prof. Prasanth Nair, Executive Secretary, IEEE imbibed to the august audience the role of IEEE in the research forum.

In his keynote speech, Dr. Sasikumar Punnekkat, Professor, MDH, Sweden spoke on Dependability Assurance in Safety-critical Embedded Systems. Dr. N. Vijayrangan, Senior Scientist, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) delivered the keynote address on Multibase Controllers for Mobile and Wireless Communications which highlighted many open areas of research.

A keynote on Smart Grids was addressed by Dr. Rajeev Thottapillil, Professor, KTH, Sweden. The numerous research areas at KTH were discussed by Dr. Rajeev which was highly beneficial to the audience. Dr. T. R. Padmanabhan, ICES 2014 Conference Chair, spoke about Machine Vision in Automation. He fascinated the delegates to probe the role of vision automation in allied disciplines of engineering.

A panel discussion on Embedded Systems in Automation examined the significance and challenges of . The distinguished panelists included Dr. Sasikumar Punnekkat, Professor, MDH, Sweden; Dr. N. Vijayrangan, Senior Scientist, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS); Dr. T. R. Padmanabhan, ICES 2014 Conference Chair and N. Kavitha, Technical Director, STEPS Knowledge Services Pvt. Ltd. The Guest Speaker Dr. Bina Ramamoorthy, Associate Professor, University of SUNY Buffalo also voiced her ideas in the panel discussion. 

Another panel discussion on practical aspects and role of Embedded Systems in Smart Grid was also held.  The distinguished panelists included Dr. Rajeev Thottapillil, Professor, KTH, Sweden; Dr. K. Balaraman, Chief General Manager, Power Research Development Consultants Pvt. Ltd; K. Ramakrishna, Additional General Manager, Power Grid Corporation of India and Dr. K. K. Sasi, Professor, Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Amrita School of Engineering. The deliberations by the panelists encouraged researchers to put forth several questions on the overall feasibility of smart grid.

Paper presentations covered topics in VLSI, Embedded Applications, Embedded Applications to Robotics and Networking, Embedded Applications and Real Time Systems, Real Time Systems. The session chairs for the four tracks were adept in encouraging discussion and giving their valuable suggestions.  The paper presentation encouraged interaction among budding researchers and stalwarts of embedded domain to their specific research problems.

The conference culminated with a valedictory function presided by Dr. T. N. P. Nambiar, Former Chairperson, Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Amrita School of Engineering who enlightened the audience with his enthralling address. Mementos were distributed to the technical collaborators, Dr. Rajeev Thottapillil, Professor, KTH, Sweden and Dr. Sasikumar Punnekkat, Professor, MDH, Sweden and to the two exhibitors of ICES 14 - Yaashika Industries and Sinetec Automation.  

The delegates of the conference talked highly about the conference which boosted the morale of the dynamic and energetic department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering.
