The Department of Information Technology (IT) at Amrita School of Engineering, Coimbatore organized a three day national workshop on 3D Vision and Multimedia Streaming ( MAGS 3D 2K14) during May 2 - 4, 2014. The event was inaugurated by Dr. Sasangan Ramanathan, Dean of Engineering, Amrita School of Engineering, Coimbatore and Prof. K. Gangadharan, Chairman, Department of IT, Amrita School of Engineering, Coimbatore presided over the function.

The rapid progress in recent times in the 3D video/ audio coding techniques and advances in 3D display devices have contributed substantially to the growing popularity of 3D multimedia applications. From 3D television and video projectors, to spatial audio systems or game consoles, there are plenty of 3D enabled terminals and systems that are now very popular with the consumers. The scope of advances in this field is seemingly limitless.

To update with the advancements and techniques the  workshop exposed the participants a variety of multimedia processing, streaming and animation techniques in different types of networks. Topics include 3D Software & Hardware, 3D Graphics, 3D Video Processing, 3D Animation, Optimization and Rendering of 3D Data, Multimedia Streaming Techniques, Multimedia Streaming for Internet, Multimedia Streaming for Elearning Networks, Multimedia Streaming for Television Broadcast Networks, Multimedia Streaming for Wireless Networks, Computer Vision, Computer Vision Software & Hardware, Networking Systems, Video on Demand & Direct to Home (DTH) in satellite and television broadcasting systems.

A galaxy of expert speakers from premier companies, research and media labs enriched the workshop with their technical sessions. The technical session and demos were handled by Amrita E- Learning, A- view and Amrita Visual Communication, Media Content. The theme of the workshop was highlighted as general research challenges in this field and solutions offered by various companies in addressing these research issues.

More than 75 participants from premier colleges, research labs and industry attended the three day workshop proceedings. This was supported by Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), Computer Society of India (CSI),  Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE) student and professional chapters of AMRITA. 

Invited Speakers:

Dr. B. Rajathilagam, Coordinator of the workshop and Assistant Professor, Department of IT, Amrita School of Engineering  gave an introductory talk on Multimedia Processing - The Challenges involved in Streaming, Video on Demand and 3D Technology.

Mr. Ananth, CISCO gave a talk on the Technical Challenges Involved in Networking Systems used for Multimedia Streaming. The session was informative on how CISCO equipments cater to the needs of multimedia applications.

Mr. Duraisingh from HP gave the audience an awareness about the variety of equipment and softwares supported by HP on wireless techniques for multimedia streaming and 3D applications.

Mr. Abhishek AMD took a session on How AMD Supports Multimedia, 3D Data and Graphics Processing using Bullet Physics Technology. He showed a live demo of AMD FirePro DVI professional graphics. The session gave the audience an awareness of how AMD graphics cards are powerful enough to handle heavy computations.

Mr. Hari and Mr. Harinath from Lucid Imaging presented on 3D Technologies and Applications that may be developed using Halcon 11, a German 3D software. They explained the basics of developing 3D applications and the solution offered by this software. They also showed pictures of equipment used for 3D techniques including cameras.

Mr. Ramesh Jayaraman and Mr. Karthik from EFX Magic and  K V Prasad Labs, Chennai, talked on Developing 3D movies, 3D Stereo Imaging Techniques and Embedding 3D Characters in 3D Movies. They demonstrated their solutions with the movies made in their labs.

Ms. Sarita Pandey, Zee TV network gave a talk on the Business Demands and Solutions for Video on Demand in the Television Broadcasting Industry.

Mr. Karthikeyan, Netcon spoke on Multimedia Streaming over Wireless Networks and Equipment.

Mr. Harikrishnan, Amrita Visual Communication presented the Fundamentals of 3D Image Design and Simulation. The session explained the basic technologies to focus on before working on the latest 3D software techniques.

Mr. Sundarrajan Venkatachar, NVidia presented Techniques of 3D Video Processing, Optimization and Rendering of 3D Data using NVidia Graphics Cards. It was very informative on the intricacies involved and the solution that NVidia offers.
