“SkillThon'18, a hands-on Workshop on Internet of Things”, was conducted from July 27-28, 2018, by IEEE- Student Branch (IEEE-SB) in collaboration with SkillIT India and Departments of Computer Science and Engineering and Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) at Amrita School of Engineering, Bangalore.
The inauguration ceremony was presided over by Dr. Navin Kumar, Branch Counsellor, IEEE-SB, and Ms. Sreebha Bhaskaran, Co-Faculty Advisor, IEEE-SB, introduced Mr. Lakshya Tyagi, the trainer from SkillIT India to the students. The event was attended by 60 student registrations of B. Tech. and M. Tech. students of Amrita School of Engineering and other reputed institutes of Bangalore. On first day, a brief overview of latest updates at IoT industries and a general outline of the IoT framework along with popular terminology in the domain was explained. Post lunch, Arduino kits were distributed amongst teams and students were instructed on how to program in the Arduino environment and design simple sensor systems. The implementations were carried out on the next day of the event. Participants began exploring on basic LED control, digital and analog I/O and worked up to interfacing humidity and temperature sensors with WiFi modules. During the workshop a mini-contest was held that tested the skills acquired by the students and the first three winning teams received a complete Arduino kit [replete with sensors and other electronic essentials] and merit certificates to all members of that team. The workshop concluded on a high note, with students having gained insight into the fascinating world of IoT. The workshop was coordinated by IEEE student volunteers and faculty coordinator Ms. Sreebha Bhaskaran, Department of CSE (Co-Faculty Advisor - IEEE Amrita SB), Mr. Sagar B., Department of ECE (Faculty Advisor: ComSoc SB) and Ms. Nidhi Gangrade, Department of ECE.
