The tenth anniversary of the Amrita College of Nursing was celebrated at the Health Sciences campus on November 1, 2012. The college was inaugurated on November 1, 2002 by Shri. Shatrughan Sinha, the then Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare.

Beginning with 50 students in the BSc (Nursing) program ten years ago, the Amrita College of Nursing has now come a long way. Today it is recognized as a major institution of nursing from where over 400 nurses have graduated, and 360 nursing students are currently enrolled. The college currently offers not only B. Sc. (Nursing) but also M. Sc. (Nursing) and Post-Basic B. Sc.(Nursing) programs.

The celebrations began with the ceremonial lamp being lit by Br. Anaghamrita Chaitanya. Prof. C. P. Unnikrishnan, Technical Director, Sree Sankara School of Dance, Kalady was also in attendance, as a guest of honor. Sharing his feelings as a teacher, Prof. C. P. Unnikrishnan stated that the duty of a teacher is to lend a helping hand to the student. “Once the student has gripped the hand of the teacher, it is not difficult to bring the students to the teacher’s side,” he said.

Dr. Krishnamurthy, Registrar, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham also attended the celebrations as a distinguished guest. “Nursing students of Amrita are held in great regard all over the world. We get feedback from hospitals and nursing homes that Amrita nurses are a class apart, because of their commitment and devotion. The credit goes to their mentors who train them to work in this manner,” he stated.

Others who spoke included Dr. Prathapan Nair, Principal, Amrita School of Medicine; Dr. K. N. Unni, Principal, Amrita School of Dentistry; Drs. Sanjeev Singh and S. K. Ramachandran Nair, Senior Medical Administrators, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences; and Dr. Umadethan, Head of the Department of Forensic Medicine, Amrita School of Medicine.

During the event, several extended activities and services of the Amrita College of Nursing were inaugurated. These were called as Ten Point Program as if to mark the ten-year milestone of the college duly announced by Prof. K. T. Moly, Principal, Amrita College of Nursing.

The nursing students paid tribute to the pioneers who had set a tradition of high-quality nursing training in the Amrita College of Nursing, by singing a song.  The token of appreciation and gratitude was extended to Sri. A. P. S. Krishnan, Dr. Prem Nair, Sri. M. N. Gopalakrishnan Nair, Sri. Ron Gottsegen and Prof. C. Chandrakanti. The audience were laid back by the glimpses of the documentary presented by the students.  A skit was performed, that served to enhance general awareness about nursing services and their importance for society.

TEN POINT PROGRAM

  1. Release of a News Letter: Newsletter on the major highlights of Amrita College of Nursing was released during the 10th Anniversary celebrations by Dr. Krishnamoorthi, Registrar of Amrita University.

  2. Integration of Nursing Service and Education: The pilot project of the integration is started on January 1, 2013 in three areas Psychiatric ward, T5F5 ward and labor room by Prof. Sreedevi P. A., Prof. Kanmani Job and Ms. Lekha Viswanath (Asst. Professor) respectively as the faculty responsible.

  3. Launching a New Data Base: As a window to the world of scientific knowledge , a new database, ProQuest was introduced with more than 15,000 thesis and 800 plus nursing journals.

  4. Community Health Services in Wayanad: Fourth year B.Sc. Nursing students accompanied by Ms. Kavitha Velayudhan and Mr. Sreejesh K. P. ( Lecturers) visited the tribal villages of Wynad viz, in December 2012. They conducted health survey and health check of about 30 families of Conventkunnu colony, Padachikunnu colony,Thiruneli and Venmony. The major health problems prevailing in the communities were alcoholism and substance abuse, hypertension, endocrine disorders and lack of personal hygiene. Health awareness programs were organised on the problems identified using various methods including street play and role play.

  5. Inter Collegiate Quiz Competition: A state level inter - collegiate quiz competition was conducted on December 1, 2012 in the College of Nursing auditorium. About 20 teams from various college in the state participated with full spirit. The program was inaugurated by Bri. Saibala , Director - Nursing, AIMS. Prof. K. T. Moly, Principal, Amrita College of Nursing, addressed the gathering. Prof. Sunil Moothedath was the Quiz master. Mr. Abhilash Chandran and Mr. Ajmal Babu of Govt. College of Nursing, Kozhikode, won the first prize. The second and third prize were bagged by Mr. Jins Jose and Ms. Soumya Jose of Govt. College of Nursing, Kottayam and Mr. Vishak Bhargavan and Mr. Nitheesh S. of Upasana College of Nursing, Kollam respectively.

  6. Voluntary Eye and Blood Donation Campaign: For blood and eye donation about 123 and 132 members (including students, faculty and non teaching staff) expressed their willingness respectively. Consent for donation of ten students each for eye and blood donation was handed over to the concerned HOD's on the day of tenth anniversary celebrations.

  7. Services to Old Age Home: A one day health program, UNARVU, was organised for the inmates of Govt. Old Age Home, Thevara on November 17, 2012. The students did health screening for all the inmates of the old age home. The M. Sc. Nursing students organized health awareness program on common emergencies in elderly and its first aid . The role play was performed by the 3rd year BSc nursing students that served to enhance general awareness about successful aging . The afternoon session was made colorful by the cultural programs of students and inmates.

  8. Alumni Meet: As part of the ten point program an alumni reunion was held on December 12, 2012 at 2.30 p.m. in the College of Nursing Auditorium. Sampoojya Swami Amritakripanandapuri gave the benedictory address. Principal presided over the function . Medical Director Dr. Prem Nair, Nursing Director Bri. Saibala and Alumni staff adviser Prof. Sunil Moothedeth addressed the gathering . About sixty members from far and near attended the function. The new office bearers of the association was selected in the meeting. The evergreen memories of their alma mater was shared with the gathering by the alumni members.

  9. A One Day Workshop for Faculty on Statistical Analysis and Interpretation of Data: The CNE Cell of Amrita College of Nursing has organized a one day workshop on Research Skills in Nursing Faculty - Filling the Gaps for the faculty of Amrita College of Nursing in connection with the tenth anniversary celebrations on November 29, 2012. The workshop was preceded by a pre - workshop activity on November 27, 2012. Dr. K. R. Sundaram (HOD - Bio Statistics) took the first session on descriptive and inferential statistical methods in research. Dr. Jayakumar of Nanosciences talked about funding for research studies . Dr. Harish Kumar (HOD - Endocrinology) dealt about the dissemination of research study.

  10. Short Term Courses in Nursing: The proposal to start eight short term courses, post basic diploma programs in Nursing has been approved and recommended in the U. G. P. meeting held on January 2, 2013.
     

COMMUNITY HEALTH PROGRAMS

  • Adolescent Clinic: About 71 adolescent girls participated in the Adolescent Clinic conducted by fourth year B.Sc. Nursing students in Nayarambalam in December, 2012.

  • Community Health Survey: Health Survey of Nayarambalam Panchayath (Ward 15 and 16) was done in December, 2012 by fourth year B.Sc. Nursing students. The survey identified various health related life style practices and health problems of rural community and the necessary care was given to the people according to priority.

  • School Health Program: Fourth year B.Sc Nursing students conducted a school health program on December 4, 2012 at St. Ambrose School, Edavanakkad. Health assessment of 163 students was done. A health educative puppet show was organized for the students.

  • Health Program at Anganwaadi: Health assessment and health education session (including role play) was organised for the children in Navajyothi Anganwadi , Nayarambalam(Ward 15) and Vishwabharath Anganwadi (Ward 1) , Nayarambalam during November - December, 2012 by fourth year B.Sc. Nursing students . About 62 children and their mothers attended the program.

  • Program for the Members of Thozhilurappu Paddhathi, Nayarambalam: Two sessions of such programme was organized by fourth year B.Sc. Nursing students on November 14, 2012 and October 19, 2012 which was attended by 26 and 41 women respectively. Health assessment of the women attending the program was done. Health education was given on physical problems of women, cervical and breast cancer. A role play conducted on healthy lifestyle was much appreciated by the women. TT immunization was also given to the participants of the programme.

  • Geriatric Clinic: A clinic was arranged for elderly in Viswabharathi Anganwadi on November 30, 2012 by fourth year B.Sc. Nursing students. About 20 senior citizens participated in the program.

  • Nutritional Program: Nutritional program was organised by fourth year B.Sc. Nursing students for children in Anganwaadi on November 17, 2012 and October 30, 2012 in Nayarambalam Panchayath (Ward 1 & 15).

  • Reproductive Health Education for Blind Students: Lekha Viswanath, Assistant Professor, delivered a teaching session on reproductive rights, physical changes during puberty and its emotional and psychological impact at the one day orientation program on Reproductive Rights for Blind Youth (Girls) organized by National Institute for the Visually Handicapped at School for Blind, Aluva on July 27, 2012

  • Health Education Sessions for Members of Residence Associations: Prof. Sunil M. was invited to deliver health education sessions on the topics lifestyle disease, common diseases during rainy season, and Etiquette to be followed while consulting doctor for the members of resident associations in Edappally North and Cheranellore.
