In order to reflect on the issues like rendering laboratory experience and clinical nursing skills virtually and bring practical solutions, Amrita College of Nursing has planned series of Webinars (Part-I and II) based on the theme, “Addressing the Virtual Clinical Learning in Nursing during COVID-19”.  Part-I was conducted on September 19, 2020, from 10.30 am to 12.30.pm. The subthemes and objectives of the webinar series are as follows:

  2. Application of virtual clinical skills during crisis-An exploration
  3. Familiarizing virtual methodologies in teaching clinical nursing skill

Objectives of the Webinar

  1. Identify the challenges in using virtual clinical nursing skills.
  2. Explore the methods of virtual clinical skills that can be applied to nursing in crisis situations.
  3. Develop virtual methodology in teaching clinical nursing skills.

The zoom online webinar session was free of registration. A total of 799 members around the world registered for the webinar. Ms. Regina Antony (Assoc. Prof.) extended a warm welcome to all. Dr. Prem Kumar Nair (Medical Director, AIMS) and Bri. Saibala (Nursing Director, AIMS) felicitated the webinar.

“Clinical Nursing Skills using Virtual Platform- A Challenge” was presented by Prof. K. T. Moly (Principal, Amrita College Of Nursing). She discussed the challenges which the faculty of Amrita College of Nursing had faced during the crisis situation. During the lockdown period, students were provided with certain virtual clinical learning experiences and she presented students’ feedback on these virtual clinical skills learning experiences with facts and figures.

“Exploration of the Methods of Virtual Clinical Skills that can be Applied to Nursing in Crisis Situation” was conducted by Dr. Prof. Sreedevi T. R., Dean, KUHS University. She highlighted various educational technologies that can supplement hands-on experience and stressed the importance of setting virtual classrooms in nursing institutions, with that synchronous learning, learning with audio-video support, session recording, live tech support, whiteboard, sharing screen and other material with students and many more operations are possible. She explained different methods like flipped learning, infographics, blended learning, podcasting, etc.

Dr. S. J. Nalini, Principal, Sri. Ramachandra College of Nursing, Chennai, dealt with the topic “Familiarizing Virtual Methodologies in Teaching Clinical Nursing Skills”. She threw light on identifying and using apt resources to improve the psychomotor skill performance of students. She integrated Oregon clinical education model in redefining student roles in the clinical scenario and mentioned some of the measures which were taken in her institution to improve the clinical nursing skills and some of the measures were modified to virtual approaches like virtual classroom education, experience-based learning, online case discussion, online education, virtual simulation, peer to peer learning. Madam also mentioned the diverse virtual clinical skill resources like TNNMC- Bodhi clinical skill modules in relation to the present scenario to enrich the clinical skills. They had also conducted an online practical examination.

Each resource person clarified the doubts paused by the delegates at the end of the respective session. Before winding up Dr. Gopalan from the medical illustration department, AIMS, also contributed his experience in the virtual teaching of medical students during COVID-19 pandemic.

Three hundred and forty delegates submitted the filled feedback form in Google forms. Overall the webinar was rated excellent by the delegates. Considering the feedback 66.4% rated choice of theme as excellent, 56% rated registration process as excellent, 48% rated good for being comprehensive content, 47.8% rated excellent as objectives were met, 56.3% rated excellent for being an informative webinar, 48.7% marked good for time management. 46.3% reported the overall webinar as excellent. Overall 49% rated as an excellent webinar.
