The Department of Civil Engineering, Amrita School of Engineering Coimbatore, in association with Indian Geotechnical Society Coimbatore Chapter, Indian Society of Earthquake Technology IIT Roorkee, and Amrita Centre for Research and Development is organizing a one day Workshop on "Earthquake Hazard, Risk and Mitigation: Theory and Practice" on August 10, 2018.
The global Workshop on EARTHQUAKE HAZARD, RISK AND MITIGATION is being organized with the objective of helping faculty members, researchers, industrial professionals and students to enhance their fundamental knowledge as well as practical concepts in the area of earthquake hazard analysis, risk assessment and mitigation strategies. The workshop includes technical sessions by world renowned experts and academicians. The workshop will provide an opportunity for networking and future collaborations.

The Department offers Undergraduate programme in Civil Engineering and PhD in all disciplines. The academic activities of the Department lay emphasis on deep understanding of fundamental concepts, analytical ability to solve problems, and enhancing the research aptitude, which are interdisciplinary in nature. With increasing number of PhD students and funded projects, the Department has been advancing in research bringing out numerous journal publications and books in recent years.
The participants are expected to learn the fundamental concepts and technicalities on below topics from this one day workshop. The topics will be covered with examples and case studies such that at the end of the day the participant will be equipped with the procedures for earthquake hazard and risk assessment of any selected region.
Dr. R. K. Bhandari is a noted geohazards researcher, and an acknowledged authority in the area of Natural Disaster Mitigation and Management. He served in numerous illustrious positions including the directorship of the UN-HABITAT program. He is the recipient of numerous awards and honors including the prestigious Varnes Medal of the International Consortium of Landslides ; Scholarship of the Royal Commission of the U.K., Plaque of Honour from the Japanese Society of Soil Mechanics; and the Distinguished Engineer Award of the Institution of Engineers (India).
Prof. T. G. Sitharam is KSIIDC Chair Professor in the area of Energy and Mechanical Sciences & Professor Department of Civil Engineering, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru (IISE). He is Chairman of the AICTE South Western Zonal Committee, and Vice President of the Indian Society for Earthquake Technology (ISET). Prof. Sitharam acted as the Chairman of Working Committee of Experts formed by NDMA, Govt of India, to prepare the guidelines for geotechnical/geophysical investigations towards microzonation studies in India ..
Dr. Sreevalsa Kolathayar is a faculty in the Department of Civil Engineering, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore, and on the board of directors at G-lntelligence IIT-Kanpur based start-up. He has authored three books and published several research articles focusing on earthquake hazard assessment. He was honored by The New Indian Express in 2017 with Edex award: 40 under 40- South India's Most Inspiring Young Teachers.
Dr. Naveen James is a faculty in the Department of Civil Engg at IIT Ropar. He has earlier worked in industry as an earthquake specialist. His research interests include Dynamic behaviour of soils, Microzonation,Site characterization, Landslide Hazard Assessment and GIS applications. He has authored one book and several research articles in reputed journals.
The book release function and inaugural session of the workshop are open for all to attend. Delegates interested to participate in workshop to attend technical sessions, avail workshop materials, certificates and lunch are requested to register online.
Working Lunch and High Tea in evening will be provided at the venue. Registered participants who attend the workshop will receive kits, workshop materials and certificates.
