Amrita Darshanam, International Centre for Spiritual Studies, will organize a three-day workshop on Kāvyālaṅkāra-sūtra-vṛtti from June 1-3, 2018.

Kāvyālaṅkāra-sūtra-vṛtti of ācārya Vāmana is an outstanding treatise on Sanskrit poetics which throws light on poetic creation, literary excellence, poetic qualities, blemishes and literary evaluation. Vāmana who belonged to Kashmir, the cradle of Indian aesthetic thought, lived in the latter half of 9th century C.E. His Kāvyālaṅkāra-sūtra-vṛtti is a lucid exposition in sūtra style of the rīti doctrine according to which rīti or poetic diction is the soul of poetry. He was the first theorist to probe into the “soul” (ātman) of poetry, through his aphorism, rītirātmā kāvyasya, anticipating the famous statement “kāvyasyātmā dhvaniḥ" of Ānandavardhana.“Vāmana also discusses the poetic erudition, poetic qualities (guṇa-s), various poetic figures, and makes a distinction between guṇa-s and alaṅkāra-s. He extols the excellence of the Vaidarbhī style of which the poetry of Kālidāsa is an epitome. He also gives practical tips to poets at the end of his work. Many of his concepts have been incorporated in later poetics. It is no exaggeration to state that without a thorough understanding of Vāmana’s theoretical position, much of the discussions in later poetics will not be intelligible to students of Sanskrit poetics.

This workshop will enable the participants to go deep into the text and acquaint them with foundational tenets of Sanskrit literary theory apart from giving them an idea of the rich critical insights of the author who quotes profusely from great masters of literature like Kālidāsa and Bhavabhūti in his learned exposition.

This workshop will be led by Dr. C. Rajendran, Dean of Sanskrit Literature, Sree Sankaracharya University, and former Professor and Head, Department of Sanskrit, University of Calicut. The recipient of several prestigious awards, Dr. Rajendran has about thirty-five books and more than two hundred papers to his credit. He has visited Germany, Finland, Poland, France, UK, Italy, Singapore, Belgium, Thailand and the Czech Republic, and worked as Visiting Professor in the École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS), Paris, Jagiellonian University, Krakow, Calcutta University and University of Poona.
