Bio

Dr. Sudip Kumar Batabyal serves as Chiarperson & Professor at the Department of Physics, Coimbatore. Before that he joined as a Senior Research Scientist in ACIRI. Erstwhile to joining ACIRI in 2015, Sudip has over 8 years of research experience in nanomaterials fabrication and application in the renewable energy sector. His areas of expertise and research interests include semiconducting nanomaterials for energy harvesting and storage, perovskite materials, printed electronics, and energy harvesting. Sudip received his M.Sc. in Physics from Vinoba Bhave University and Ph.D. from Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (Jadavpur University).

Sudip worked in National University of Singapore on metal coordinated gel and co-ordination polymeric nanofiber from 2007 to 2010. After that he shifted to Energy Research Institute @ Nanyang Technological University (ERI@N) and started work on the project of solution-processed Cu2InGa(S/Se)2 (CIGS) and Cu2SnZn(S/Se)4 solar cell. He developed the CIGS and CZTS absorber layer deposition on Mo substrate by spray pyrolysis method. He successfully fabricated the solution-processed CIGS device with more than 10% efficiency.

He also supervised the group activity of the CIGS group. He developed some solution phase fabrication techniques of CIGS solar cells for economic and large-scale production. Along with the CIGS and CZTS type devices, he also worked on the other p-n junction photovoltaic devices and DSSC. He developed different metal sulfide and oxide composite nanostructures and used them for solar water splitting and for energy storage in Li and Na ion batteries.

In his research career, he has focused on a wide variety of novel materials (metal chalcogenide, metal oxide, organic semiconductors, carbon nanotubes, and graphene) synthesized by a range of fabrication procedures. His main emphasis was on the electronic and optical properties of these materials and the direct application of these nanostructures in practical devices. His research work has been published (~150 publications) in many high impact factor journals such as Nature Communication, Advanced Materials, ACS Nano and Advanced Energy Materials, etc.

He has supervised over 50 undergraduate and postgraduate projects. He has successfully guided 5 PhD students in the past 8 years. He currently holds a group of 10 PhD students working on energy harvesting, energy storage, thermal evaporation and hydro voltaic power generation.

Research Interest

Solution Processed Photovoltaic : High fabrication cost of solar cell is the main obstacle for the wide spread application of the solar energy harvesting. Our aim is to develop simple cost effective technology for the fabrication of high efficient solar cell from solution chemistry. We are mainly focused on the thin film PV devices and third generation solar cell.
Nano materials for energy harvesting : Our Main emphasis is on the synthesis and application semiconducting nanomaterials for energy harvesting. Because of size dependent properties we can tune the band gap of the materials and can synthesised selective band gap materials for device application. Also we are interested to modify the surface chemistry of the nanomaterials for the selective application.
Materials development for solar water splitting: We are interested for conversion of the solar energy into chemical fuels (H2) by photocatalytic reactions and conversion of the greenhouse gas CO 2 into hydrocarbons fuels via photocatalytic reactions. Our main focus is to development of electrode materials for photoelectrochemical energy harvesting by understanding the electronic properties of the materials such as carrier concentration, mobility, trap density, carrier diffusion length and interaction with the electrolyte.
Electro Chemical Energy storage: Energy storage devices and systems have an important role in realizing the renewable energy future for our society. So to spread the application of renewable energy we have to develop cost effective energy storage devices. We are interested on the development of low-cost, nanostructured materials and composite materials for high-performance electrode for electrochemical energy storage systems. The synthetic methodology will be environmentally friendly and compatible with large-scale processing for energy storage systems including lithium, sodium batteries and electrochemical capacitors.
Graphite Like Transition Metal Dichalcogenide Nanostructures for Superior Charge Storage In Supercapacitors: Over the past decade, noteworthy research has been made towards metal-based chalcogenide systems for energy storage and energy harvesting applications. However, the key motto of this project is to explore dichalcogenide systems for charge storage applications. The interactions between chalcogenides(X) such as sulfur, selenium, and phosphide in the transition metal dichalcogenide systems (MX2) are unsorted. Layered dichalcogenides are particularly suitable for intercalation. The interaction between chalcogenides is explored. This work aims to secure the benefit of charge storage in dichalcogenides by phase and compositional engineering.
Photo Rechargeable Energy Storage Systems: Solar cells are usually merged with an electrochemical capacitor or rechargeable batteries as solar energy is easily accessible. This may enhance the cost and complexity of the system. To address this issue, a material which is capable of harvesting and storing energy can be of immense help to reduce the cost. Therefore, we propose a photo-rechargeable system that can be charged directly from sunlight without any external solar cells. Aiding the conventional rechargeable energy storage system in saving electrical energy input and achieving large-scale application of solar energy can be enhanced by exploiting solar energy in rechargeable energy storage systems. The solar-driven rechargeable energy storage system incorporates photoelectrode which can further simplify the system than the external combination of PVs.
Lead Halide Perovskites as an Exemplary Claimant for Optoelectronic Applications: In-organic halide materials like cesium lead halides have drawn greater attention as novel materials for optoelectronic devices such as solar cells, LEDs, photodetectors, memory storage devices etc. Materials of this kind show an uplifted stability and comparable optoelectronic properties along with their hybrid counterparts. Remarkably the high PLQY for the lead halide perovskites enabled them as strong candidates in the backlight as well as display technologies. Pivoting the research interest in these areas of intervention will serve as an asset for an upcoming optoelectronic era.
Aqueous Metal Ion Batteries as an Efficient Charge Storage Stratagem: The struggle for finding a better energy storage device has gained substantial potential since post commercialization. Considering the safety measures, the use of organic electrolytes has raised major concern due to its flammable nature. Hence water-based electrolyte technologies have appeared since they offer higher ionic conductivities to meet the higher power density demands in the present scenario. Aqueous ZIBs and SIBs are considered to have driven their way, becoming a milestone in next-generation batteries. It considers the requirement that an energy storage device should have, involving high theoretical storage ability, and long-term cycling stability.
Lead Free Based Perovskite Materials for Self Powered Photodetectors: Solution processable lead halide perovskite materials have high efficiency but has always been a drawback due to its high toxicity and hazardous nature. Chemical instability and toxicity concerns have promoted the search for safer lead-free perovskite materials for photovoltaic and optoelectronic applications. Among the solution processable photoactive materials investigated for optoelectronic applications, halide perovskites have risen to prominence in recent years due to their remarkable optoelectronic properties. Lead free halide perovskites have also gained considerable amount of attention for photodetection, including self-powered mode. Lead free based perovskite materials has been particularly promising due to their self-powered photodetector performance which has taken their way far beyond the lead-based counter parts. The research mainly focuses on lead free perovskite materials for self-powered photodetectors.
Photocatalytic Water Splitting: Because of the rapid depletion of fossil fuels and related environmental issues, the development of alternative renewable energy from sustainable resources has become a significant concern in recent years. Among all the available possibilities, hydrogen looks to be the most promising as a clean fuel, with the potential to be widely used in fuel cells and other energy storage and conversion devices. We are interested for conversion of the solar energy into chemical fuels (H2) by photocatalytic reactions and conversion of the greenhouse gas CO2 into hydrocarbons fuels via photocatalytic reactions. Our focus is to development of electrode materials for photoelectrochemical energy harvesting by understanding the electronic properties of the materials such as carrier concentration, mobility, trap density, carrier diffusion length and interaction with the electrolyte.
Development of Multifunctional Solution Processed Quarternary Chalcogenides Via Cation Exchange of CZTS: Our research focuses mainly on the development of new techniques and materials for the fabrication of low-cost thin film light absorbing layers and their multifunctional applications as a potential replacement. Zn from the quaternary chalcogenide-based semiconductor CZTS was replaced by a transition metal known as iron, barium cadmium, etc to form different quaternary chalcogenides.
Metal Chalco Halodes And Layered Perovskites for Nonlinear Photovoltaics: In the current energy scenario, quantum mechanical optical response works as next- generation photovoltaics. The latest theoretical and experimental development conceptualize and realize the materials and devices based on such responses. Perovskite and perovskite-like materials are classics. We found some success in the development of the devices based on the materials and have visualized the response. Further research is underway.
Interfacial Solar Evaporation for Fresh Water Production and Hydro Voltaic Power Generation: The lack of fresh water – one of the world’s major challenges, has sparked and aided to the implementation of high supply solutions for drinkable and clean water. Solar thermal evaporation technique (STE) offers a continuous high-quality freshwater without impairing any natural resources as a better solution to this issue. To convert the entire sun spectrum into heat, a solar absorber with a low thermal conductivity porous substance is placed on water. Compared to traditional solar water filtration methods, that heat can evaporate the water significantly and more quickly. Fresh water can also be generated by condensing the evaporated water. Recently, this excellent water purification application has been integrated with a novel power generation way called hydrovoltaics (HV). This mechanism utilizes the combined effect of interaction between functional group substrate and water during water wicking through the STE device. This combined system can give a huge impact to generate freshwater and power generation simultaneously, without any external energy requirement.
Monograin 3D Solar Cells: Till date, there has been immense growth in research, development, and commercialization of various kinds of solar cells from amorphous, polycrystalline, to monocrystalline forms. In addition to the monocrystalline and thin film approach, the third alternative to prepare solar cell structures is the use of powder materials. Powder technologies are the cheapest form of technologies for materials production. We are mainly focusing on fabricating and designing 3D monograin solar cells with CZTS, CFTS and perovskite materials to achieve high efficiency.
