Mr. Sivraj P joined Amrita School of Engineering in the year 2010. He is presently working as Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Ettimadai, Coimbatore. His areas of research include Wireless Sensor Networks, Smart Grid, Robotics, Embedded System Design, RTOS and Automotive Electronics.

He obtained his B. Tech. degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering in the year 2007 from Mahatma Gandhi University, Kerala (Saintgits College of Engineering) and M. Tech. degree in Embedded Systems in the year 2010 from Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore. He is currently pursuing his Ph.D. from Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham in the area of Sensor Networks applied to Smart Grid. 

He has visited ICS Department of KTH University, Stockholm, Sweden from 20th May 2013 to 20th June 2013 and from 16th January 2014 to 31st January 2014 as part of the Indo-Swedish collaborative project between Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham and KTH University funded by DST and VINNOVA in the area of Energy Management in Smart Grid using Embedded Systems. 

He has guided 14 M.Tech. and 13 batch of B.Tech. students till now. He has to his credit 19 International Conference/ Journal publications. He has served as the steering committee member for the International Conference on Embedded Systems – ICES 2014, held at Amrita School of Engineering, Coimbatore. He has served as the reviewer for the various National and International events like TI-India-ADC 2011, TIIADC 2012-13, TIIEC 2013, TIIC-IADC 2014, ICES 2014, etc. 

He has delivered several expert lectures and conducted many faculty development programs and student workshops in the area of Micro-controllers like PIC Series, ARM based, etc., and RTOS platforms like Windows XP Embedded, Windows CE 6.0 etc., and software platforms like MATLAB, LABVIEW, etc.

He has mentored various student teams who have achieved laurels in many national level competitions like

  • “Low-cost conversion kit for automobiles” – by H. Sivaramakrishnan, Shanoop Padmanabhan and Sabarish Balakrishnan received Certificate of Appreciation and fourth place in ELECRAMA 2012, sponsored by the Ministries of Power; Commerce & Industry and Heavy Industries & Public Enterprises, where around 800 student teams from the IITs, NITs, other engineering colleges as well as polytechnic institutions participated.

Smart metering was introduced as part of automating the grid, where the meters automatically send the meter readings to the central utility. Unlike the existing system of GSM based single hopping transmission that involves huge traffic and costs, a meter-to-meter multi hopping data transmission network is proposed here. The selection of communication technology in smart meter network is very crucial. In this paper, a smart meter network with random topology is taken and, based on the literature survey and taking the advantages into account, ZigBee is selected for home-to-home network and also for communication between data collecting node and central station. Analysis of the selected network is done based on the performance metrics like throughput, delay, packet delivery ratio and number of repeater nodes. The multi hopping smart meter network is implemented in hardware and received data is made accessible in the system via GUI.

Smart grid is the emerging electricity network envisaged to connect the supplier and the consumer by two-way digital communication. One of the main attractions of the smart grid is the Wide Area Control System (WACS) with distributed controllers which actuate the instructions issued by the central controller. This paper focuses on the hardware implementation of a communication network for WACS in which ZigBee is used as the communication technology from the control station to the control unit. The control message sent should follow Distributed Network Protocol version 3 (DNP3), which is an IEEE standard for communication between central station and Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs). The simulation is done in network simulator (ns2), in which the number of packets follows the DNP3 format. Using mbed board a network topology is created for the WACS communication network and the control messages are communicated from the control station to the control units to validate a satisfactory performance.

Smart Grid, the next generation electric grid offers continuous monitoring and control which needs management of resources like measured data, control information, relays, switches etc. These resources will increase as the grid emerges and management of these scattered, bulk and highly complicated data will become difficult with conventional data storing and resource management mechanisms, which makes the cloud model of resource management relevant and significant. This paper deals with the formation of an embedded networking with six systems. Graphical User Interfaces (GUI) are created for different stake holders like consumers, energy traders, operators etc. through which they can access and control the grid assets. The proposed system will improve the performance of the grid by enabling various functionalities such as: analyzing energy usage, managing peak usage, demand management, trading of electricity between smart grid stakeholders such as consumers, operators, generators etc., which ensure efficient operation and management of the smart micro grid.

Face segmentation plays an important role in various applications such as human computer interaction, video surveillance, biometric systems, and face recognition for purposes including authentication and authorization. The accuracy of face classification system depends on the correctness of segmentation. Robustness of the face classification system is determined by the segmentation algorithm used, and the effectiveness in segmenting images of similar kind. This paper explains the level set based segmentation for human face images. The process is done in two stages: In order to get better accuracy, binarization of the image to be segmented is performed. Next, segmentation is applied on the image. Binarization is the process of setting pixel intensity values greater than some threshold value to “on” and the rest to “off”. This process converts the input image into binary image which is used for segmentation. Second process is image segmentation for eliminating the background portion from the binarized image which is obtained after the binarization of the original image. Conventional approaches use separate methods for binarization and segmentation. In this paper we investigate the use of recently introduced convex optimization methods, selective local/global segmentation (SLGS) algorithm [16] for simultaneous binarization and segmentation. Safety-critical systems have to be fault tolerant and also meet stringent temporal constraints. Various redundancy strategies are built into such mission-critical applications to ensure the overall success of the mission. This paper implements a fault tolerant scheduling scheme on a dual processor system, wherein the redundancy is made at the task level. The system continues to function with graceful degradation under failure conditions. The redundancy management employed in the proposed scheme enhances the performance capability of the system. Based on this approach, the scheme is implemented with hardware simulation using LPC-2148 development boards. This simulation when used for implementing any practical safetycritical application can contribute to efficient utilization of computing resources and can prove to be highly cost effective as the number of processors increase. The paper presents the development of a system which will help wirelessly monitor the health parameters of a soldier and also send and receive messages wirelessly from the base station computer. The system must also detect reduced vitals and alert the base station along with the GPS location so that a rescue team can be sent. The system comprises of a biosensor signal conditioning module, a GPS module, a keypad and a LCD. These are interfaced with the Stellaris LM4F120XL Launchpad, which in turn broadcasts messages wirelessly via the EZ430-RF2500 wireless module. These messages are sent to all the EZ430-RF2500 modules in the locality. A LabVIEW program has been developed to act as the central commanding station. This will process all the data from the individual soldiers, display the data and perform the functions mentioned. This will help in strategic planning of military missions and also to reduce casualties

Though various methods for controlling the robot have evolved over the last few years, an easy solution for this problem can be obtained by using human gestures as a mode of control for the robot. Gestures are the most significant means of interaction among humans, therefore the most intuitive solution for problem of controlling the robot lies in imitation, where the user adopts the role of a master and his/her actions are replicated by the robot, slave. Our mobile robot (slave) has two arms that can mimic the actions of human (master). The navigation is controlled using a joystick and the arm is controlled by the human actions.

The traffic problems in the cities across the globe have worsened with the increase in population. Traffic light plays an important role to control the traffic on the road. Hence there is requirement for the better traffic light controlling system. So to improve the traffic light control various techniques have been introduced like fixed timer based systems, using electric and magnetic sensors to detect the vehicle, and neural networks based systems. But all these technique or methods have not given good result due to many problems like difficulty in the installation and maintenance of these equipment’s. So in order to overcome the above problems, researchers introduced vision-based system for collecting and analyzing road traffic data. Image processing technique proved to be the better technique so far because of low cost and low maintenance required. This paper proposes a system which uses canny edge detection technique for identifying the density of the traffic. Simulation results are used to show how canny edge detection technique gives better result compared to other edge detection technique for calculating the traffic parameters.

Real-Time Operating System (RTOS) is a multitasking operating system intended for real-time applications in the embedded domain which includes robotics, automotive, industrial control and security, and scientific research equipments. The evolution of embedded systems paved way for the development of first, generic RTOS and then gradually application specific RTOS. In this paper the design and implementation of a vehicle dashboard system, called Vehicle Management System is made with eBOX 4300 as the embedded hardware platform and Windows CE 6.0 RTOS, is discussed. The application for vehicle dashboard is developed in Visual Basic.Net. As future work the performance of this WINCE based system is analyzed using standard remote debugging tools in Visual Studio 2005. The same Vehicle Management System is to be implemented in some other RTOS based embedded unit and the performance of both systems is to be compared. Based on the comparison, the evolution of RTOS from generic to application specific nature can be understood and finally the need and advantages of application specific RTOS for given application can be brought out.

This paper presents a solution for existing power crisis by implementing state of art techniques to tap power from solar energy. The use of Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) technique along with the efficient charge control of the battery helps attaining a maximum output. A digitally controlled DC-DC Buck-boost converter was implemented and connected to Solar PV Array. State of Charge (SOC) of battery is continuously monitored to decide the charging rate of the battery at every instant. Moreover, the dynamic response and SOC are also evaluated using a user-friendly GUI interface which is capable of controlling the system and computing the SOC. An inverter connected to the battery produces an AC voltage which is stepped up to power the domestic load.

The paper focuses on design and fabrication of a hexapod robot that is capable of performing primary tasks such as walking forward, backward, turning right and left, rotating about its position by 180° and traversing on uneven surfaces. The six legged design gives it an added advantage over wheeled robots in terms of stability and flexibility. Each limb is structured to have three degrees of freedom. This robot will serve as a platform onto which additional sensory components can be added for surveillance and autonomous navigation on rugged surfaces. This paper discusses in detail the hardware design of the structure, selection of all parts and components used and software design controlling all activities including the walking style of the robot and balancing on uneven surfaces.

This paper proposes a Real Time Data Collection Unit (RTDCU) to be used in the distribution side of a smart grid for real time data collection. The RTDCU unit uses Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) based approach to compute the voltage and current phasors and frequency of the power system signals. The design, development and testing of such a system is done for a 5-bus micro grid simulator which represents a scaled down model of approximately 25km2 grid with a peak demand of 15MW. The RTDCU unit is first simulated and tested in MATLAB environment using synthetic signals and the correctness is ensured. The unit is then implemented in hardware in a dsPIC30f4011 microcontroller and tested for different loads. The future scope of the unit and the ways to improve the performance and synchronized data collection are also discussed.

Hostage crisis has become a common act by terrorists. Recent siege in Algeria has shook the world and the death toll still remains uncertain. Algerian Prime Minister, Abdelmalek Sellal, said 37 foreign nationals from eight countries and one Algerian died in the siege with five more people unaccounted for. Soldiers need to act spontaneously and contain the situation. They need to have a rough picture about the situation. RC controlled planes move fast and cannot go inside the buildings without being noticed. And also during battles on hilly terrains, spying becomes a difficult task and few examples mentioned above will not be able to do the task. Anything that helps soldiers survive and do their jobs better is certainly welcome. An autonomous robotic vehicle is an excellent choice as it meets the requirements. The vehicle should be able to spy in areas where human access is restricted and also it should not topple when spying on rough terrain and could be controlled from anywhere without range restrictions. In future there might be a time when all the human soldiers are replaced with robots.
