All foreign nationals, student or otherwise, coming to India are required to possess a genuine and valid national passport or any other internationally recognized travel document establishing his/her nationality and identity, including a photograph.
MANDATORY: All foreign nationals who plan to stay more than 2 months (60 days) MUST register himself/ herself with the local Foreigners Regional Registration Officer (FRRO) within 14 days of arrival. This is required to avoid paying a fine. Registration facilities are not provided at the airport but in the office of the FRRO or District Superintendents of Police. A member of the Amrita Center for International Programs can accompany students to the local FRRO but all transportation charges must be paid by students .
Required at the Time of Registration

At the time of registration, every foreign national shall furnish accurate information, to the satisfaction of the Registration Officer, and shall sign the Registration Report in the presence of the Officer. The foreign national shall also be provided a copy of the Certificate of Registration (Part III of Form A). Foreign nationals may go through the instructions given on Registration Certificates for their guidance concerning stay and future reporting.
Obligation to Produce Registration Certificate
Every registered foreign national will, within twenty-four hours, which can be extended if sufficient cause is shown, be liable to show any registration officer, any magistrate or any police officer, his/her certificate of registration for inspection on demand. If the registration officer, magistrate or police officer, is of the opinion that the passport or other documents of identification produced by the foreign national do not furnish adequate proof of identity and if the registration certificate does not bear the photograph or finger impressions/signatures, he/she may be asked to produce:
The finger impression/signatures will be made and attested in the presence of the Registration Officer.
Penalty for Late Registration
Though no fee is required for registration, a penalty in Indian currency equivalent to U.S. $30 (Rs. 1,395) is charged if you do not register within 14 days of your arrival.
