Workshop: Designing Robots for a Better Living

Service robotics research is very challenging and complex because, principally, such robots must be able to safely work beside, cooperatively with, or for, people in changing indoor and/or outdoor environments to be successful. This is an inalienable objective that has encouraged roboticians to constantly improve the performance and abilities of robots, especially, since late 1980s. Relevant examples of commercial success stories includes, the Paro, a robotic seal developed by AIST, Japan for companionship and therapeutic purposes in a home setting, the iRobot Roomba, the famous autonomous indoor robotic vacuum cleaner, and Kiva, the mobile robot used in the novel automated material handling system by Kiva Systems. Nevertheless, in spite of these important practical results and the tremendous advances in artificial intelligence, mechanics, sensing, actuation, and control in the past two decades; multi-purpose service robots are still far away of working autonomously in fully dynamic human-related environments. Success of real world deployments of service robots has been general limited and at times disappointing. In this workshop, design issues associated with successful service robot deployments would be discussed in detail. The participants would be engaged through two hands on impulsive design activities aimed at realizing robots for a better living.

Dr. Mohan Rajesh Elara received his Ph.D and M.S degrees from the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore in 2011 and 2005, respectively. He obtained his B.E degree from the Amrita Institute of Technology and Sciences, Bharathiar University in 2003. Since October 2011, Dr. Rajesh has been a Lecturer in the Engineering Product Development Pillar, Singapore University of Technology and Design, Singapore. He was a Lecturer in the School of Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Singapore Polytechnic from October 2006 to October 2011 and Research Associate in the School of Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Nanyang Technological University from April 2005 to October 2006. He is a visiting faculty in the School of Science and Technology, Singapore Institute of Management, Singapore Since 2010. His research interests are in reconfigurable robotics, design for robots, and modular mechanisms with emphasis on design as well as research problems related to control, human robot interaction, navigation, and perception. He has published more than 50 papers in journals, books, and conferences. Dr. Rajesh has served in various positions of organizing and technical committees of several international competitions (RoboCup International, Singapore Robotic Games, RoboCup Singapore Open, RoboCon, First Robotics) and conferences (ICIUS, ICICS, ICIEA, ICARA, ISATE)

WAVELET TRANSFORMS AND ITS APPLICATIONS

In the past two decades, a lot of theoretical and application work has been done in the area of wavelet transforms. Because the multiresolution framework of wavelets is close to human visual system, wavelets are being used actively in the area of biomedical image processing. Unlike other transforms, wavelet basis is not unique. Hence, an important research question arises as to which wavelet should be used in an application. This tutorial presents the basics of wavelet transform. The concept of signal matched wavelets will be covered and participants will get to know how they can estimate matched wavelet from a given signal. Some applications of wavelet transforms in signal/image processing will also be discussed.

Speaker Profile

Anubha Gupta received the B.E. and M.E degrees in electronics and communication engineering from Delhi University (DU) in 1991 and 1997. She received the Ph.D. degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, India, in 2006. She completed a second master’s in higher education leadership and policy studies from the University of Maryland-College Park, USA in 2010.

Dr. Gupta worked with All India Radio as Assistant Director from 1993 until 1999 and as Assistant Professor with Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology (NSIT), DU from 2000 to 2008. She worked with Bowie State University, Maryland, USA as Director of Assessment from 2010 to 2011. Since July 2011, she is working as Associate Professor in the Signal Processing and Communications Research Center at International Institute of Technology-Hyderabad (IIIT-H).

Her teaching and research interests include signal processing, wavelet transforms and its applications, and biomedical signal/image processing. She is also interested in higher education policy issues including financing of higher education, access, and retention.

Dr. Gupta is a member of IEEE Signal Processing Society and a life member of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunications Engineers (IETE), India.

RF-MEMS – Design, Manufacturing & Applications

The field of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) has been applied to RF (freq<2GHz) to millimeter wave frequency (3-300GHz) circuits to create high performance passive components. RF MEMS offer advantages in terms of low insertion loss, good isolation, wide-band operation, low power consumption and light weight. Perhaps most importantly the use of RF MEMS techniques can facilitate new levels of dynamic circuit reconfiguration. In this seminar, various designs of RF-MEMS switches along with its manufacturing and packaging techniques will be presented in detail. Furthermore, tunable filters and phase shifters that utilize these switches for wireless and phased array applications will be presented.

Speaker Profile

Mr. Srinath Balachandran received his Bachelor of Engineering from the University of Madras, India. He finished his M.S and Ph.D., both in electrical engineering specializing in the area of RF-MEMS from the University of South Florida. Upon graduation, Srinath pursued his postdoctoral research at the Center of Nanoscale materials in Argonne National Laboratory. At ANL he was involved in developing MEMS and NEMS switches using thin film ultra-Nanocrystalline diamond (UNCD) for wireless applications. Since 2010, Srinath has been with Innovative Micro Technology where he is involved in developing fully packaged RF-MEMS devices for wireless and phased array applications.

Workshop: Introduction to embedded multitasking [hands-on with simulators]


Duration: Four hours

Course

Increased Complexity, Multiple task handling and reduced development times are major forces in the development process of Embedded Systems. Multitasking is the ability to execute multiple separate tasks in a fashion that is seemingly simultaneous.

The Workshop provides an introduction to “Embedded Multitasking”. It contains a Hands-on Simulation section which provides students an idea on Real Time Operating System (RTOS) and Embedded Multitasking. Real Time Operating System serves real time application requests with no delays. Consistency, Scheduling and minimal interrupt latency are few of its key characteristics.

The workshop is targeted to make the students understand multitasking and operating system using a grassroot level system. Students will be familiarized with the real time operating system “OSA”. OSA is the RTOS used for PIC (Peripheral Interrupt Controller), Atmel AVR and STM8 Controllers.

Students must bring their laptops. Microchip C Compiler and MPLAB IDE [students version] will be installed in the laptops at the venue.

Mr.Vysakh Pillai is an embedded systems R&D professional with 4+ years of experience in design and development of various layers of an embedded system from hardware to Interactive UI. He holds a Masters degree in digital system design and has worked on multiple projects developing high-end solutions for companies like Nokia and VSSC. Currently he is working as an embedded systems engineer at Cisco Video technologies India and is responsible for developing rationalization modules for multi-room STBs

Seminar: "Design for Testability"

Motivation

From a front end perspective, RTL designs once fully verified and is at a satisfactory functional coverage value, it is sent to the fabrication unit for the getting it on to the silicon. When the fabrication process is complete and the chip is in hand, we cannot predict about the errors or mistakes that must have happened during the fabrication process. So even though, the functionality of the design was intact, we cannot be sure of the silicon level correctness. There could be different errors like stuck at faults, bridging etc. Moreover, the chip level verification engineer have little access to the inside of the chip to see the fault

Course

Design for Testability is a design concept which makes the chip verification friendly. During the RTL design phase, DFT designers in cooperates a unit inside the RTL with which the chip level verification engineer can target the inside of the chip and there by spot on the fault. Now there is a lot of restrictions like chip area, pin count etc that will be constraints for DFT insertions. In order to tackle such issues, concepts like ATPG (Automatic Test Pattern Generator), BIST (Built-In Self Test), MBIST (Memory - Built in self Test) came up. It is a design technique which makes the microelectronic hardware product, testing friendly. It provides accessibility for the testing engineer a provision to get into the fabricated chip and do a whitebox testing and thereby reducing the post manufacturing defects in the chip considerably. Starting from the DFT basics and requirements that lead to the development of the concept DFT, seminar will take a tour into the DFT concept like seminar will give a detailed picture on ATPG, BIST, MBIST, scan Designs etc. Concept wise, seminar will be broader and less deep.

The event will be conducted as a 4 hour session for the students on career guidance. Situation awareness is the key to security. Awareness requires information that spans multiple scales of space and time. The increasing need for sophisticated surveillance systems and the move to a digital infrastructure has transformed surveillance into a large scale data analysis and management challenge. Smart surveillance systems use automatic image understanding techniques to extract information from the surveillance data. While the majority of the research and commercial systems have focused on the information extraction aspect of the challenge, very few systems have explored the use of extracted information in the search, retrieval, data management and investigation context. The IBM smart vision suite (SVS) is one of the few advanced surveillance systems which provides not only the capability to automatically monitor a scene but also the capability to manage the surveillance data, perform event based retrieval, receive real time event alerts thru standard web infrastructure and extract long term statistical patterns of activity.

 Sharath Pankanti is at Research Staff Member and Manager with Exploratory Computer Vision  Group at IBM T J Watson Research Center. He received a B.S. degree in Electrical and Electronics  Engg from College of Engineering Pune in 1984, M.Tech in Computer Science from Hyderabad  Central University in 1988 and Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from the Michigan State  University in 1995. He has published  over 100 peer-reviewed publications and has contributed to  over 50 inventions related to biometrics, privacy, object detection, and recognition. Dr. Pankanti  is an IEEE Fellow. His experience spans a number of safety, productivity, and security focused  projects involving biometrics-, multi-sensor surveillance, driver assistance technologies.

Mr. Gopal Krishna

Mr. Gopal Krishna is currently working as the Managing Director at Maxim India Integrated Circuits Pvt. Ltd at San Francisco Bay Area from August 2006. He worked as the General Manager of AMD IEC at Advanced Micro Devices Inc. as well as that of AMD India Engineering Center during 2004 and 2006. He also has experience as the director at HW Engineering at Realchip communications and also as the director at Real chip Communications Inc. He completed his masters from University of California in 1984 and bachelors from Bangalore University in 1982. His skills and expertise lie in the fields of Semiconductors, ASIC, Analog, Embedded Systems and Mixed Signal.

Dr.Mohan Rajesh Elara

Dr. Mohan Rajesh Elara received his Ph.D and M.S degrees from the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore in 2011 and 2005, respectively. Since October 2011, Dr. Rajesh has been a Lecturer in the Engineering Product Development Pillar, Singapore University of Technology and Design, Singapore. He was a Lecturer in the School of Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Singapore Polytechnic from October 2006 to October 2011 and Research Associate in the School of Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Nanyang Technological University from April 2005 to October 2006. He is a visiting faculty in the School of Science and Technology, Singapore Institute of Management, Singapore Since 2010. His research interests are in reconfigurable robotics, design for robots, and modular mechanisms with emphasis on design as well as research problems related to control, human robot interaction, navigation, and perception. He has published more than 50 papers in journals, books, and conferences. Dr. Rajesh has served in various positions of organizing and technical committees of several international competitions (RoboCup International, Singapore Robotic Games, RoboCup Singapore Open, RoboCon, First Robotics) and conferences (ICIUS, ICICS, ICIEA, ICARA, ISATE).

Dr. Sharath Pankanti

Dr. Sharath Pankanti is at Research Staff Member and Manager with Exploratory Computer Vision Group at IBM T J Watson Research Center. He received a B.S. degree in Electrical and Electronics Engg from College of Engineering Pune in 1984, M.Tech in Computer Science from Hyderabad Central University in 1988 and Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from the Michigan State University in 1995. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed publications and has contributed to over 50 inventions related to biometrics, privacy, object detection, and recognition. Dr. Pankanti is an IEEE Fellow. His experience spans a number of safety, productivity, and security focused projects involving biometrics-, multi-sensor surveillance, driver assistance technologies.

Dr. Anubha Gupta

Dr. Anubha Gupta received the B.E. and M.E degrees in electronics and communication engineering from Delhi University (DU) in 1991 and 1997. She received the Ph.D. degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, India, in 2006. She completed a second master’s in higher education leadership and policy studies from the University of Maryland-College Park, USA in 2010.

Dr. Gupta worked with All India Radio as Assistant Director from 1993 until 1999 and as Assistant Professor with Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology (NSIT), DU from 2000 to 2008. She worked with Bowie State University, Maryland, USA as Director of Assessment from 2010 to 2011. Since July 2011, she is working as Associate Professor in the Signal Processing and Communications Research Center at International Institute of Technology-Hyderabad (IIIT-H).

Her teaching and research interests include signal processing, wavelet transforms and its applications, and biomedical signal/image processing. She is also interested in higher education policy issues including financing of higher education, access, and retention.

Dr. Gupta is a member of IEEE Signal Processing Society and a life member of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunications Engineers (IETE), India.

Mr. Jayesh

Mr. Jayesh is an expert in this field and is a student trainee under the Career Launcher team. He is also the Business partner of Career Launcher India Ltd and Director, Career Launcher Trivandrum (Kerala).He took his executive MBA from Harvard University in Human Resource and Marketing Management. He has more than 15 years of experience in preparing students for examination for entry in various academic courses both nationally and internationally, at both undergrad and postgrad levels. He is also the Founder/Partner and CEO of Vertex HR Management Consultants and Career Training Academy and also have 7 years of corporate experience as Mines Manager in companies like Coal India Ltd, English Indian Clays Ltd, Caterpillar Inc. His work experience include Consultant Empanelled Trainer of Mafoi Management Consultants Ltd, Chennai, TN.He also worked as Assistant Mines Manager for 2 years in English Indian Clays Ltd, a multinational company dealing with mining and processing of china clay and Technical Marketing Manager for 3 years in Grintex Asia Ltd( a subsidiary of Caterpillar Inc. U.S.A, Carpco, MDL Technologies, Readings of Lismore Pty, Australia), dealing with export, import, erection, installation and commissioning of Heavy Duty Mining Machinery. He has been training students in more than 30 educational institution like IIT Kanpur, National Institute of Technology, Calicut, Kerala, Amrita Viswa vidyapeetam, SRM University, PMC college of Engineering, Hosur, Tamilnadu, Asian Business School, Trivandrum, College of Engineering, Trivandrum and many more.

Mr.Anoop

Mr.Anoop, Systems/Networks Manager in the Amritapuri Campus of Amrita University has 13 years of strong experience in Systems/networking. He has a strong expertise in WAN/LAN technologies, Systems and Network Administration with outstanding troubleshooting abilities. He has also worked as Systems Administrator in Infozech Ltd, Delhi and Network Administrator in CDAC, Trivandrum. He is highly trained and knowledgeable in computer networking encompassing planning, designing, implementing and maintaining local area networks. He also have a comprehensive background using multiple operating systems such as Windows, Linux and Cisco IOS. He is a MCA graduate from DOEACC (2002) and has a diploma in Electronics & Avionics (1998). He also has an industrial certification on CISCO, Redhat, Microsoft, Radware, Extreme, Checkpoint, Fortinet.

Mr. Prabaharan

Mr. Prabaharan is an Asst. Professor at Amrita Cyber Security Center. He has 17 years of experience in various areas of Cyber Security including, Network security, Application Security, Cryptography, Reverse engineering, Malware Analysis, Mobile and wireless security etc. His current research focus is on the situational awareness in Cyber Security, Cyber Physical and Social systems security among other areas.

Mr.Srinath Balachandran

Mr. Srinath Balachandran received his Bachelor of Engineering from the University of Madras, India. He finished his M.S and Ph.D., both in electrical engineering specializing in the area of RF-MEMS from the University of South Florida. Upon graduation, Srinath pursued his postdoctoral research at the Center of Nanoscale materials in Argonne National Laboratory. At ANL he was involved in developing MEMS and NEMS switches using thin film ultra-Nanocrystalline diamond (UNCD) for wireless applications. Since 2010, Srinath has been with Innovative Micro Technology where he is involved in developing fully packaged RF-MEMS devices for wireless and phased array applications.

Mr. Sethu Rao

Mr. Sethu Rao is an associate Professor at the Amrita Center for Wireless Networks and Applications, Amrita University since 2012. He received his B Tech in Mechanical engineering and M Tech in Computer science from IIT Madras. He has held engineering management positions at Juniper Networks and Alcatel-Lucent in USA for over 18 years before joining Amrita in 2012.

Mr.Vysakh Pillai

Mr. Vysakh Pillai is an embedded systems R&D professional with 4+ years of experience in design and development of various layers of an embedded system from hardware to Interactive UI. He holds a Masters degree in digital system design and has worked on multiple projects developing high-end solutions for companies like Nokia and VSSC. Currently he is working as an embedded systems engineer at Cisco Video technologies India and is responsible for developing rationalization modules for multi-room STBs

Mr.Arjun Ashok

Mr. Arjun Ashok is Currently working with Intel Technologies India Pvt Ltd as 'Graphics Hardware Engineer' in Structural Verification. Prior to this, He worked with AMD for an year in Functional Verification. He is an MS graduate from Manipal University in the stream VLSI Design.

He has a work experience working as the vice president, strategic alliance at ThoughtBuzz,team member at Microsoft and a senior software engineer at Infosys Technologies. He completed his Masters in Business Administration from SP Jain Institute of Management & Research, Mumbai -SPJIMR in the year 2009

Mr.Snehal Shetty

Mr.Snehal has over 16 years of technical and management experience in the development of technology products and solutions for the IT industry. He worked as the first employee at a silicon valley startup which later on went to receive $21 million in VC funding. Over the past 8 years, he enjoyed performing fundamental and technical analysis of several companies listed in US markets.
In his current role as Vice President, Amrita TBI, he is involved in building the startup ecosystem at Amrita University, mentoring startup companies and students, commercializing innovative products and building the social entrepreneurship program.
Snehal completed his B.E(Electronics) from University of Pune and MBA Finance from George Mason University, Virginia, USA.
