ISRO Village Resource Centres
The Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) objective of utilising satellite technology for rural development and Amrita University’s vision of creating self-reliant villages became a reality with the launch of Amrita-ISRO Village Resource Centres (VRCs).
Supported by the global IT giants like Microsoft, Intel, CTS and HP, the VRCs launched by President APJ Abdul Kalam in villages in Tamil Nadu and Kerala would create a sustainable space technology-supported community infrastructure for the transformation of rural India.
Amrita is extending e-learning to rural areas equipped with telemedicine, telefishery, tele-education, and farmer’s advisory services. Lectures by experts in various fields are also being transmitted from Amrita University in Ettimadai, Coimbatore to classrooms set up in the villages. This project has also expanded into e-commerce and e-governance, empowering the people and improving their lives by connecting them with valuable current and accurate information.
