Amrita Academic and Student Initiatives Lauded at Infosys Principals Meet
Amrita University's academic and student initiatives, such as industry electives and ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) Asia Pacific Regional contest, were showcased by the Infosys Campus Connect leadership as pioneering initiatives in industry-institute interaction at the Infosys Principals Meet on March 13, 2015.
The Infosys Principals Meet is an annual congregation of heads of institutions, Corporate & Industry Relations (CIR) and Computer Science & Engineering (CSE) departments along with the Infosys Campus Connect team. More than 250 heads from all over South India, attended the 2015 meet, which was held at the sprawling Infosys campus at Electronics City, Bangalore.
Dr. P. Suresh, Head, Infosys Campus Connect lauded the initiatives of Amrita University and suggested that other institutions could adopt these as a model and replicate their successes. More than 500 premier universities and colleges in India are part of the Infosys Campus Connect program.
It was pointed out that Amrita School of Engineering, Coimbatore was the first institution in India to adopt Industry elective from Infosys, "IT Essentials" in the curriculum as early as 2005. Subsequently, several universities and autonomous institutions have started adopting industry electives from Infosys. Presently, in addition to this highly sought elective, Business Intelligence and Aerospace Engineering are the other Infosys industry electives being offered at Amrita.
The collaboration of Infosys with Amrita in the ACM ICPC was also highlighted. In addition to sponsoring the ICPC, Infosys was using the ICPC format for their captive contest, Aspirations 2020 in which hundreds of thousands of students from their partner colleges were participating. The top teams of Aspirations contest are given special incentives to the Amrita ACM ICPC like waiver of online round and registration fees. ACM ICPC is the Olympics of Programming contests with annual participation of over 20,000 students from 2000 universities from 80 countries. In India, the regional contest or semi-finals is organized by IITs at Kharagpur and Kanpur and Amrita at its campuses at Amritapuri and Coimbatore.
The Infosys campus connect team also presented a valued partner certificate to Amrita in appreciation of the collaboration. A. Balachandran, Senior General Manager, Corporate and Industry Relations and Prashant R. Nair, Vice-Chairman, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Amrita School of Engineering, Coimbatore represented Amrita at the meet.
