The department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering of Amrita School of Engineering, Coimbatore organized a national level Faculty Development Program (FDP) on Power Systems Lab with the support of theInstitution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE) from July 9-10, 2015.
The workshop was coordinated by Associate Professor Dr. S. Balamurugan and Assistant Professor Dr. K.R.M. Vijaya Chandrakala of the department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Amrita School of Engineering, Coimbatore.
The objective of the FDP was to convert the simulation based power system lab into a hardware based power systems lab, thereby making the B.Tech., M.Tech. and Ph.D. students to take up hardware based projects. The experiments gave a deeper understanding about power systems than simulation based teaching.
Dr. P.N. Kumar, IETE Chairman, Coimbatore Center inaugurated the program. Dr. K.R.M. Vijaya Chandrakala welcomed the gathering. Dr. T.N.P. Nambiar, Professor-Emeritus, gave the presidential address. He described the significance of the hardware based power systems lab. The program schedule was explained by Dr. S. Balamurugan.
A total of 15 participants attended the FDP from Tamil Nadu, Kerela and Karnataka. During the FDP, hands-on training was conducted in Performance Analysis of Transmission Lines, Design of Transmission Lines, Ferranti Effect, Shunt Compensation, Series Compensation, Real Power Control, Reactive Power Control, Active Series Compensation, Surge Impedance Loading, Solar Power, Wind Power, Smart Grid, Enhancement of Steady State Stability areas using hardware set up by the Power System Operation and Control TAG team.
The participants gave very positive feedback about the FDP. They expressed the intention to create such a hardware based power system lab in their institution. Finally, Dr. S. Balamurugan, coordinator of the FDP and TAG Head of Power System Operation and Control, distributed the certificates and proposed the vote of thanks.
