Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore, celebrated Gokulashtami (Lord Krishna’s Birthday) on August 12, 2017, with great devotional fervor, enthusiasm and fanfare. The highlight of the colorful celebration was a procession in which students, staff and residents of the Amrita campus participate. The procession included eleven beautiful floats depicting various incidents in Lord Vishnu's and Lord Krishna’s life and exploits like Krishnamritam, birth of Krishna, Narasimha Avatara, Bhima-Jarasandha battle, etc. Children dressed up like Krishna added more colour and gaiety to the procession. The procession, and indeed the entire atmosphere, were charged with devotional fervor for Lord Krishna as the students sang and danced along to the lively bhajans. The floats were conceptualized and designed by student groups in various departments and schools of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham. To encourage healthy competition and bring out the hidden potential and talents of the students, various competitions in sports, literary and cultural events and a painting exhibition on Bhagavad Gita were also conducted.
