Developer Weekend was a community driven two day event initiative by FACE (Forum for Aspiring Computer Engineers) of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Amrita School of Engineering, Bengaluru campus, well supported by Amrita TBI - Technology Business Incubator and StudyOwl.in. The motto of Developer Weekend was to ‘focus on new and trending technologies to utilize the weekend to master the technologies learnt’. Developer Weekend provided students the opportunity to interact with, and gain insights from, industry experts from various technical backgrounds.

Developer Weekend on Chat Bots

Developer weekend on Chat Bots was held on November 19th and 20th, 2016. Over 5o students attended. It consisted of a hands-on session on Chat Bots and tech talks on Artificial Intelligence (AI), taught by Mr. Prashanth Reddy from StudyOwl.in. Mr. Jaydeep from Rentomojo demonstrated how to operate a Bot.

Chat bots are computer programs that mimic conversation with people using artificial intelligence. They can transform the way you interact with the internet from a series of self-initiated tasks to a quasi-conversation. Chat Bots are a once in a decade paradigm shift. After the launch of desktops in the mid-'80s, browsers and websites in the mid-'90s, smartphones and apps in the mid-'00s; it’s the turn of messaging and bots in the mid-'10s. The session discussed the static and dynamic types of responses of a chat bot. The platform Chat Fuel and Gupshup were used to create Bots. Students built 20+ bots on the Facebook messenger platform during the event.

Developer Weekend on Python

FACE (Forum for Aspiring Computer Engineers), in association with StudyOwl.in, conducted a workshop on Python in GSOC (Google Summer of Code) perspective, as a part of Developer Weekend. It was held during the winter vacation from 17th to 21st December, 2016. Sanket M. Bhat, Secretary – FACE, welcomed the guest speaker Mr. Sricharan, a GSOC mentor and an alumnus of Amrita School of Engineering, Bengaluru campus.

On the first day, Sricharan from SAP started with his experiences about Google Summer of Code. He gave some tips on how GSOC can be cracked in a limited period of time. His hands- on training session started with students getting to work with GIT.

On the second day, Mr. Abhinav from Paypal, and Mr. Bharath, a security freelancer, gave hands-on training on Networks and Security. This facilitated the students to create packets. The students loved the interesting hands-on session.

On the third day, Mr. Sricharan resumed and conducted a hands–on session on the basics of Python. He also gave some challenging exercises for the students to work out.

The fourth day’s session was conducted by Prashanth Reddy of StudyOwl.in and Sricharan. FLASK & Progressive Web Apps (PWA) were explained to the students. It was an interactive session, with advanced topics in Web Development covered.
