Multiple Honors for Coimbatore Sports Enthusiasts
April 8, 2011
Amrita staff and students from the Coimbatore campus have been winning honors at state-wide sports championships.
In October 2010, S. Vaishnavee, first-year B.Tech. student of Computer Science and Engineering, made Amrita proud when she won ten medals at the 36th State Pistol and Rifle Shooting Championship at the Coimbatore Rifle Club Range.
In January 2011, J. Selvanambi, gym instructor, won the silver medal in the Senior State Weight Lifting Championship conducted at Railway Community Hall in Podanur, Coimbatore.
What inspired these achievers to aspire for the honors?
“I became attracted to the sport during my school days,” shared Vaishnavee. “Since Standard IX, I have been practicing at the Coimbatore Rifle Club.”
Last year, when she represented Coimbatore at the state-level finals, among other events, she participated in the 10m open sight rifle, 50m .22 rifle prone and 50 m .223 position. She won six silver and four bronze medals overall!
She missed the national-level event that was conducted during the same time as her college exams.
Last year, Vaishnavi came in fifth in the 10m range event at the All India Rifle Shooting Championship in the sub-junior category.
“I practice at the Coimbatore Rifle Club every week,” she shared. “During these practice sessions, we receive a lot of guidance from the senior players. My role models are Abhinav Bindra, Tejaswini Sawant and Lajja Goswami. I am very inspired by them.”
Also serving as a role model and inspiring many aspiring contestants at the Coimbatore campus, J. Selvanambi, gym instructor, motivates students to keep fit physically, physiologically and mentally.
“I am happy with the manner in which students respond to the fitness regime followed here,” he shared. “They show great interest in coming to the gymnasium regularly.”
A veteran of several state-wide honors, last year Mr. Selvanambi won the gold medal in the Senior State Weight Lifting Championship.
During his graduation and post graduation days, he was also the recipient of several weightlifting and power lifting championships. Both in 2005 and 2006, he secured the first prize at the Tamil Nadu Inter College Weight Lifting Championship.
We congratulate these individuals who have made us proud!
