Amrita School of Pharmacy organized two scientific sessions in connection with the inauguration of PharmacyWeek Celebrations 2015 on November 23, 2015. The programs started at 10 am with prayer invoking the blessings of Chancellor Amma. Mr. Naveen Kumar Panicker, Lecturer, Amrita School of Pharmacy, welocomed the speakers and distinguished invitees to the gathering. The distinguished speakers were, (1) Dr. Silvio Dutz, Head of Magnetic Nanoparticle Group, Institute of Biomedical Engineering and Informatics, Technische Universität Ilmenau, Germany and (2) Dr. P. Selvamani, Assistant Professor, Department of Pharmaceutical Technology, Center for Excellence in Nanobio Translational Research, Anna University, Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu, India.

Principal Dr. Sabitha M. graciously welcomed the gathering. Dr. R. Jayakumar, Professor, Amrita Center for Nanosciences and Molecular Medicine, presided over the function. The two scientists, inaugurated  the Pharmacy Week Celebrations by lighting the ceremonial lamp,  later delivered talks related to nanomedicine and its therapeutic, as well as diagnostic applications.

Dr. Dutz gave a presentation entitled “Medical Applications of Magnetic Nanoparticles with a Special Part on Hyperthermia." He explained  the current developments in research related to usage of magnetic nanoparticles for diagnostic and therapeutic applications. They have developed and tested various magnetic-nanoparticle-platforms, such as agents for treating cancer by hyperthermia as well as removal of the cancer cells from blood by aphaeresis. Students at the Amrita School of Pharmacy were curious about these new technologies and actively interacted with the speaker. Dr. Kaladhar, Assistant Professor, School of Pharmacy, chaired the session.

Subsequently, Dr. Selvamani gave a speech on “Nanotechnology Applications in Life Sciences.” The tutorial presentation was highly informative, illustrating the course of developments in nanotechnology and how their applications could be enlisted in medical field. Dr. Selvamany interacted well with students through out the presentation. Mr. Emmanuel James, Associate Professor, chaired the session. Mr. Renju Radhakrishnan, Lecturer, School of Pharmacy extended the vote of thanks.
