Former international cricketer, S. Sreesanth, inaugurated the World Cancer Day function at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi on February 4, 2017. He said, “There is no need to be afraid of cancer as there are hospitals like Amrita Hospital that provide treatment with international standards.” He spoke about his friend, fellow cricketer Yuvaraj Singh, a cancer survivor, who went on to win the ‘Man of the Series Award’ in the 2011 World Cup. He also cited the example of Malayalam film star Mamtha Mohandas who courageously fought cancer and is a role model for cancer patients across Kerala. 

Brahmacharini Karunamritha Chaithanya blessed the occasion. Dr. Prathapan Nair, Principal, Amrita School of Medicine; Renu Raj, Assistant Collector, Ernakulam; Dr. M. Narayanan, IMA, President, Kochi; Dr. K. Pavithran, Head, Oncology, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences; Dr. Debnarayan Dutta, Head, Radiation Oncology, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences; Mr. P. Gangadharan, Head, Cancer Registry, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences; and C. G. Prameela, Associate Professor, Radiation Oncology, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences spoke on the occasion. A cancer awareness program and quiz program were also held in association with the program.

Community Outreach

The department of Community Medicine, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, in association with Student Police Cadet observed World Cancer Day at Government School, Tripunithura. Assistant Commissioner of Police Anil Kumar inaugurated the function. Dr. Rakesh P. S. Assistant Professor, Community Medicine; Unnikrishnan T.A., Headmaster; Durga M. Menon, Rathishkumar R; and Sabu P. S spoke on the occasion.
