AIMS, Kochi Achieves Rare Feat with Double Forearm Transplant

Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS), Kochi conducted an elbow-level double hand transplant on a 21-year-old youth, Jith Kumar Saji, who lost both his forearms in 2013 due to electrical burns. This was the first time such elbow-level hand transplant had been made in the country. Dr. Subramania Iyer, HOD, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, AIMS, led a team of 25 surgeons and a 12-member anesthetic team in a marathon surgery that lasted 14 hours. This is the third double-hand transplant at the hospital.
