Doctors at the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Center (AIMS) at Kochi successfully carried out India's first hand transplant. The surgery was conducted on Manu, who had lost both his hands in a train accident and the transplanted organ was taken from a brain-dead 24 year old accident victim with the same blood group. Dr. Subramania Iyer, Head, Department of Plastic Surgery, Amrita institute of Medical Sciences said "Manu would need rigorous physiotherapy sessions and it could take about a year to use his hands completely."
