Organ transplantation is only the hope for patients with end stage organ failure.
On the occasion of World Organ Donation Day on November 27, 2015, Dr. Subramania Iyer, Head, Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS), Kochi, presented the two cases of hand transplant that were carried out by him and his team of 20 surgeons. He was speaking at the KEM Hospital, Kochi. These were the country's first cadaver hand transplants. "Hand transplants are the best option for bilateral hand amputees," said Dr. Iyer. He expressed the need for more hand transplant centres across the nation.
