One in every five students in the 12-19 age group in Kerala suffer from psychological distress, shows analysis of various studies from across the state done by the department of psychiatry of the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences. It has been found that of the total number of students in this age group, 11% suffer from mild psychological distress and 5% each from moderate and severe psychological distress.

Dr. Dinesan N, head, Department of Psychiatry, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, said, “Most of the time, youngsters are not able to cope with stress and use a variety of coping mechanisms like substance abuse. In Kerala, the prevalence of alcohol among adolescents is found to be 15 per cent (23 per cent in boys and 6.5 per cent in girls), with prevalence increasing with age.
